State Chess League 1986/87
The 1986/87 season was the 12th season of the Austrian State Chess League .
At the top the differences were small. The first four places were separated by only 1.5 points. In the end, SK Merkur Graz prevailed over the defending champion SK VÖEST Linz , SG ASK / KSV Klagenfurt and WSV ATSV Ranshofen .
The newly promoted ASK Salzburg could not assert itself in the state league, ended up with a gap of 2.0 points behind SC Donaustadt only in tenth and thus last place, and had to relegate immediately.

Events
The competitions took place on October 11th and 12th 1986, November 8th and 9th 1986, December 13th and 14th 1986, January 10th and 11th 1987, January 24th and 25th 1987, January 7th and 8th. February 1987, February 21 and 22, 1987, March 14 and 15, 1987 (a competition was played on February 28 and March 1) and on March 28 and 20, 1987. The last double round was centralized in Linz played, the rest took place decentrally at the clubs involved.

Qualifying tournament for the State League A 1987/88
The qualifying tournament for the State League A took place in Vienna from June 6th to 8th . The participants were SC Inter Salzburg (winners of the western league), TSV Hartberg (winners of the southern league) and, with SK Flötzersteig-Breitensee and SK Währing, the second and third placed in the eastern league (the winners of the eastern league, the second team of the SK VÖEST Linz, was not eligible for promotion, as a club could be represented by a maximum of one team in the state league). The SK Flötzersteig-Breitensee won the tournament and thus achieved direct promotion.
