etymology

The name Rodenbach was mentioned in documents as Rodinbach in 1330 . It has its origin in the color red. The color of the brook is based on washed out iron hydroxide . The name Scheidtbach comes from Scheid / Scheidt , which derives from Middle High German divide / divide (separate, separate, divide). The Scheidt House, which emerged from a medieval foundation, used to stand in the area of the Scheidtbach . Today Scheidtbachstrasse is named after the brook.

In dialect one speaks of Rodemich , with -me as the typical Bergisch ending for -bach. Rodemich has been preserved as a street name in the area of the Rodenbach residential area .

history

Originally the name Rodenbach applied to the entire stream. At the height of today's sports field on the Rübezahlwald, the Rodenbach flowed through a small lake. There a nameless water flowed from the left. The lake was preserved even after the sports field north of the brook was built in the 1950s. A part of the Rodenbach to the west of Bensberger Strasse was already piped in the mid-1950s when trade and industry were settled there in the Gronauerwald . In the course of the construction of the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Gymnasium in the 1960s south of the sports field, the lake was drained and the stream in this area piped. With the expansion of the Zinkhütte industrial park in the early 1970s and the associated piping of the stream there, the upper course was called Scheidtbach .
