history

Legend has it that the name Auerstedt as "Awartostete" comes from the leader of a clan called Awarto. Auerstedt is mentioned for the first time as "Awartesstete" in a document from the Fulda Tithe Register during the term of office of Abbot Hrabanus Maurus of the Fulda Monastery (and later Archbishop of Mainz ) from 822 to 842 AD (in the Eberhardi Codex ); Another document states that in 1073 King Heinrich IV. (HRR) handed over the entire Villa Owerestetten (Auerstedt) and other places in the exchange of goods to his vassal Boto from Baden during his stay at the Eckartsburg . In older documents Auerstedt was also written Auerstädt . In the middle of the former Auerstedt manor there is a bower that has the character of a self-fortification. It was the seat of the noble family who owned it.

Auerstedt was one of two scenes in the double battle near Jena and Auerstedt on October 14, 1806 between Napoleon's troops and the Prussians and has since gained national fame. Today, among other things, a sandstone memorial plaque on the manor building, numerous battle-related paths and two of the four formerly four (planted around that time) so-called “Napoleon linden trees” remind of this event.

In the war of 1870/71 Auerstedt suffered two war deaths. Together with the war participants from 1866 and 1870/71 as well as a soldier from the colonial wars, you will be commemorated with a war memorial on the square next to the local history museum. The battle of 1806 is also referred to on this monument.

The fallen of the two world wars is commemorated on a memorial in front of the local church. From the First World War, according to the inscriptions on the memorial, 28 local residents did not return, and 44 men died or went missing in the Second World War.

Already from 1992 to 2012 the municipality was administratively part of the fulfilling municipality of Bad Sulza, before it lost its independence as a municipality on December 31, 2012 and, together with other municipalities, was incorporated into Bad Sulza and Bad Sulza thus became the legal successor to the dissolved municipalities.
