The Wellenberg Castle stands in the town of Hausen at Frauenfeld in the Swiss canton of Thurgau on a barrier hill of wave crest above the Thur valley.

history

The first documentary mention by Walter von Wellenberg goes back to the year 1204. In the course of the termination of the interregnum by Rudolf von Habsburg , the people of Zurich destroyed and burned the castle in 1258 because raids into the area had been carried out from there. Ulrich von Wellenberg and his two nephews were imprisoned in Zurich and ultimately had to swear a primal feud . They also had the right to live in Frauenfeld.

In 1370, Wellenberg Castle came into the hands of the von Strassers as a fief of the Reichenau Monastery , who handed over the property to the Lords of Hohenlandenberg around 1370 . The rule of Wellenberg included jurisdiction over Wellhausen, Thundorf and the surrounding farms as well as the bailiffs of Mettendorf , Eschikofen and Lustorf . The Hohenlandenbergers were servants of the Habsburgs and successful in the run-up to the Appenzell Wars . They ruled from both Frauenfeld Castle and Sonnenberg Castle . Margarethe von Hohenlandenberg founded the castle chaplaincy in 1450, which later became the parish of Felben.

Around 1513, the legendary Jakob Mötteli von Rappenstein acquired Wellenberg Castle. In 1537 the lordship came into the possession of the lords of Ulm for around 130 years . Shortly before the Thirty Years' War , Gregor von Ulm reinforced the defenses and weapons of the castle.

In 1669, Johannes Escher acquired the property on behalf of the City of Zurich, which in turn sold it to Joachim Leonz Eder on November 17, 1815 . On March 24, 1900, the siblings Nikolaus, Verena and Louise Bienz sold the Schenkel family's farm, which had now been established, together with the castle. In 2002 the castle was placed under federal protection. Two years later, the Wellenberg Castle Foundation was established as part of the “800 Years of Wellenberg Castle” anniversary celebration.
