Sister Agnes is a 1975 television film produced by DEFA and directed by Otto Holub . It was first broadcast on International Women's Day on March 8, 1975 on GDR television .

The shooting of the fictional Krummbach took place in Waltersdorf and Jonsdorf in the Zittau Mountains .

action

Sister Agnes, a single woman in her mid-fifties and a committed community nurse with a wit and a Berlin-style snout for more than thirty years , lives and works in the small village of Krummbach in Upper Lusatia , where she drives her white swallow to her patients and looks after them. She helps where she can and that is one of the reasons why she is so popular with her patients.

Sister Agnes doesn't just make friends because of her good-natured, but sometimes interfering nature. For example, she wants to solve the problem of limited living space in the town bypassing the municipal council in her own way. When she clashes with the new mayor about this, she goes on strike under the pretext of being sick and finally threatens to request a transfer to another location. This causes the resentment of the Krummbach citizens who do not want to lose their sister Agnes.

Although the feature film is primarily entertaining, social criticism of the conditions in the GDR in the 1970s is not spared: social commitment and moral courage of the individual - here in the form of sister Agnes - are met by officials from above who are loyal to the line, but unworldly.

meaning

The film Sister Agnes is still very well known, especially in the new federal states , and is associated with the GDR community nurse system. Based on the popular role of Sister Agnes , several comparable community sister model projects have been named after her in recent years . For example AGnES in Leipzig or agnes two in Brandenburg . In August 2018, initiatives based on these models were requested for NRW .
