Sebring is a city and also the county seat of Highlands County in the US state of Florida with 10,491 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

The urban area encloses Lake Jackson . Orlando is 130 km and Tampa is 140 km away.

history

In 1912 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad built a railway line from Haines City to Sebring and in 1918 another line from Sebring to Moore Haven . In April 1924 the subsidiary Florida, Western and Northern Railroad of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad was founded, which was to build a railway line from Coleman via Sebring to West Palm Beach . The entire corridor was opened in January 1925.

Sebring is known across national borders for the Sebring International Raceway , where the Sebring 12-hour race is held. In the 1959 Formula 1 season , the first US Grand Prix was held here.

Religions

In Sebring there are currently 69 different churches from 28 different denominations, of which the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 15 churches. There are also 9 churches that do not belong to any denomination (as of 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 10,491 inhabitants were distributed over 5,623 households. The population density was 788.8 inh / km². 76.0% of the population identified themselves as white , 14.7% as African American , 0.7% as Native American and 1.4% as Asian Americans . 4.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.7% to several ethnic groups. 17.6% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 44.1% of all households lived in 23.3% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 54.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.17 people and the average family size was 2.85 people.

20.9% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 20.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 32.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 47 years. 48.4% of the population were male and 51.6% were female.

The median annual income was $ 30,319, with 21.9% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 89.39% of the population, 10.19% spoke Spanish and French spoke 0.42% .

US Highways 27 ( SR 25 ) and 98 and Florida State Road 17 run through the city . The Sebring station is a station of trains Silver Star and Silver Meteor train company Amtrak on the line from Miami to New York City . The nearest airports are Sebring Regional Airport (national, 10 km southeast) and Orlando International Airport (around 130 km north).

The crime rate in 2010 was 363 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There was one murder, four rapes, 15 robberies, 39 assaults, 129 break-ins, 323 thefts, ten car thefts and three arson attacks.
