Sergei Vladimirovich Polunin ( Russian Сергей Владимирович Полунин ; Ukrainian Сергій Володимирович Полунін / Serhiy Wolodymyrowytsch Polunin , * 20th November 1989 in Kherson , Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a Russian ballet dancer of Ukrainian origin. At the beginning of his solo career, Polunin was considered the enfant terrible of classical ballet. With his extraordinary charisma and brilliant technique, the much talked about dancer became the "new" star of the ballet world.

Life

Polunin grew up in very modest circumstances with his mother Halyna Polunina in Kherson, Ukraine, while his father Volodimir Polunin looked for work in Russia . His enthusiasm for dance was evident at an early age, so that at the age of four his mother sent him to gymnastics lessons (6 hours a day) in a sports school in order to prepare for a career as an artistic gymnast. However, at the age of 8 he switched from gymnastics to dancing in the Chersonese dance school Juventa . After completing the one-year preparatory course, he began ballet training at the Kiev State Choreography University at the age of 9 . This was made possible by the financial support of the father working in Portugal and the grandmother working in Greece , so that mother and son could live in a common room in Kiev.

When Polunin was 12 years old, his mother sent a video and photos to the Royal Ballet School , which then invited him to audition in London . This resulted in a scholarship from the Rudolf Nurejew Foundation so that, after successfully completing his degree in Kiev, he was able to continue his further education in London at the Royal Ballet School in 2003 at the age of 13, but now without his mother, who had the money for the Life in London was missing. Because of his lack of knowledge of English, he didn't have to go to general school, so he trained considerably more than his older classmates. After graduating as one of the best, he was hired by the Royal Ballet in 2007 at the age of 17 , in 2009 he became principal solo dancer and in 2010 principal of the Royal Ballet, the youngest since the Royal Ballet was founded. After two successful years, he could apparently no longer bear the psychological strain and loneliness, so that on January 24, 2012 he announced his immediate resignation from the Royal Ballet and disappeared from the public.

In the summer of 2012, Polunin made the acquaintance of the world-famous dancer Igor Anatolyevich Selensky , artistic director of the ballet of the Novosibirsk State Academy of Theater, Opera and Ballet and the ballet troupe of the Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich Danchenko Music Theater , who invited him to Russia and played him Principal dancer of his two ballets engaged. Zelensky became his mentor, gave him security and freedom so that Polunin could develop anew.

In 2014 Polunin started a collaboration with the American photographer David LaChapelle and took part in his new projects, in particular in his dance video Take me to Church 2015 with music by Hozier .

In 2016, Polunin performed with the first soloist of the Royal Ballet Natalia Osipova , with whom he was also in private life, in Sadler's Wells Ballet in a program with new works. Osipova and Polunin also danced the leading roles together at the New Year's Eve performance on December 31, 2015 in the Ballet of Novosibirsk in the Nutcracker . In the 2016/2017 season, Polunin appeared as a permanent guest soloist in the Bavarian State Ballet .

In the film Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie's eponymous bestseller Polunin 2017 played the Count Andreyni alongside Kenneth Branagh , Penelope Cruz , Judi Dench and Michelle Pfeiffer . In 2018 he played a supporting role in Ralph Fiennes ' film The White Crow .

Since 2019 he has been in a relationship with the Russian ice dancer Jelena Iljinych .

Controversy

The Paris Opera Ballet decided in January 2019 to withdraw an invitation to Polunin, who was slated for a leading role in the new production Swan Lake . Homophobic and sexist statements by Polunin on social media were cited as the reason . There he announced, among other things, that gay dancers need “a powerful punch”, that they are an embarrassment and the reason why women now want to take on male roles in ballet. The dancer Adrien Couvez stated that it was impossible for the Paris Opera to invite a man with such views in 2019. Aurélie Dupont , the art director of the Paris Opera, said Polunin's statements were incompatible with the values of her institution. The Munich State Opera was then confronted with criticism and prompted to justify Polunin's commitment to two performances at the Bavarian State Ballet.

His Kolovrat symbol tattooed on his stomach and his portrait of Vladimir Putin tattooed on his chest, which is highly regarded in Russia, also sparked discussion . In Germany it is pasted over.

Projects

After Polunin had finished the video for Take me to Church with David LaChapelle in Hawaii in 2014 in a choreography that he and a friend had created for it, he actually wanted to quit ballet and enroll at a film school in Los Angeles. After the success of the video, Serhij gave up on this project and in 2015 shot a documentary about his life in Dancer - Bad Boy of Ballet . Another project with David LaChapelle will be a 40-minute dance film that will be shot in Hollywood and in which a prominent cast of actors will appear. At the same time, Polunin announced that he will open a dance center in Belgrade, Serbia. He had already mentioned his idea of looking for a place to stay in Belgrade, where he sees a similar cultural awakening as in Berlin in the 2000s. Polunin can be seen in a promotional video Ambassodor of the Serbian National Museum in Belgrade, the worldwide premiere of which was broadcast on the occasion of the reopening of the museum on June 28, 2018. Isidora Žebeljan composed the music for the choreography .

At the same time, a center for the promotion of young dancers is to be established in London and, as a Polunin project, the aim is to ensure the independence of young up-and-coming dancers from restrictive contracts on large stages.
