Hungerford sold his stake to another speculator named Field. This bought even more shares and sold all shares in Colonel Elisha Sheldon of Salisbury , Connecticut , a veteran of the American Revolutionary War . Colonel Sheldon and his sons Elisha Junior, George and Samuel moved to Vermont around 1789, more settlers followed and the town was renamed Sheldon in 1792.
The Sheldons were active in town and state politics. Colonel Sheldon and Elisha Sheldon were elected selectmen at the constituent assembly of the town and Samuel Sheldon was elected to the town clerk and later to the Justice of Peace, as well as MPs in the Vermont House of Representatives.
A railroad stop in Olmstead Falls, known as Sheldon Springs since 1884, became a tourist spot. After the main hotel was destroyed in a fire set by a disgruntled employee, tourism declined.
