The six Thatchers (original title: The Six Thatchers ) is the first episode of the fourth season of the British television series Sherlock . The first broadcast was on January 1, 2017 on the BBC , the German-language premiere took place on June 4, 2017 on Das Erste .

action

The episode begins with a monologue from Sherlock who tells the story of meeting in Samarra . This is followed by a flashback to Magnussen's death in His last oath . Mycroft briefs Sherlock and a parliamentary committee chaired by Lady Smallwood on the new "official" story of Charles Augustus Magnussen, who was murdered by Sherlock - the footage has been edited to make it look like he was shot by a soldier. Sherlock then decides to await the posthumous revenge of his archenemy Moriarty, while at the same time John Watson and his wife Mary welcome the arrival of their baby, whom they call Rosamund, or Rosie for short . To pass the time, Sherlock solves trivial cases; with assistance from John Watson, Mycroft, and Lestrade.

When investigating a case in which David Welsborough's son is found dead in a car accident despite seemingly staying in Tibet for a year, he quickly resolves the case, but becomes aware of something else. He notices that a plaster bust of Margaret Thatcher is missing from his Thatcher collection in the father's (Sir Edwin) apartment . Shortly afterwards you find it destroyed again. More busts around the world are destroyed and Sherlock lies in wait for the last undestroyed one. When a burglar tries to destroy the plaster bust, Sherlock catches him red-handed. When Sherlock smashed the plaster bust after a fight with the burglar next to him, he found a USB stick with the initials AGRA on it . It turns out that each letter on the stick represents a person, AGRA was a freelance government task force. The burglar Ajay and Mary Watson were the only survivors in a mission that failed. Mary was the R in the name, her previous name was Rosamund. Ajay is convinced that Mary betrayed him back then and therefore wants to take revenge on her.

All members have a USB stick with data on top of each other to ensure the silence of each member (one member publishes information about the other, the other member can publish information about the traitor). A failed rescue mission by members of the British embassy (postponed by the code word “ammo”) in Georgia resulted in the death of the embassy members and the escape of Mary. After Mary Sherlock has told her story, she anesthetizes him with a prepared letter and escapes. She begins a trip around the world, always camouflaged differently and under new names, and randomly rolls the dice to which country she will travel next. However, Sherlock and John quickly find them in Morocco because they have placed a tracking device on the memory stick. Suddenly, Ajay, who was following Sherlock, shows up and tells that he was tortured in captivity but was able to hide his stick in one of six limited edition Thatcher busts. He blames Mary for his betrayal because during his torture he heard of "Ammo" and "the English woman" who were the cause of the mishap. Ajay tries to kill the trio but is shot dead by the police. Sherlock, John, and Mary suspect that Ajay thought Mary was the English woman .

Sherlock visits Mycroft and discusses the situation. Mycroft explains that he was previously responsible for "AGRA", but not since the failed mission. Mycroft also says he has no knowledge of "Ammo". However, Sherlock Mycroft later explains that "ammo" actually comes from the Latin word amo ("I love"). Smallwood, whose code name Love (Love) , it is then interviewed by Mycroft. But her guilt cannot be proven. Sherlock puts the pieces of the puzzle together when he remembers Mary mentioned that secretaries get all kinds of information. He then meets Smallwood's secretary Vivian Norbury at the London Aquarium. Vivian reveals to him that she was manipulating AGRA's mission . Her motive was to kill the British ambassador hostage to Georgia who had found out that Vivian was selling secrets in order to lead a more exciting life. When the police and Mary arrive, Vivian pulls a gun from her pocket and shoots Sherlock. Mary jumps in front of Sherlock at the last moment to protect him and dies in his place. John appears and Mary tells of her love and that her only true destiny was to be Mary Watson. Then she dies in John's arms. Since Sherlock had sworn to protect her, he and John fall apart.

After Norbury is arrested, Mycroft comes home and finds a note ("13th") on the refrigerator. He immediately picks up his cell phone, calls someone and lets them connect to Sherrinford . Meanwhile, Sherlock visits John's therapist to chat (albeit reluctantly). Back on Baker Street, Sherlock and Mrs. Hudson mourn the loss. But then Sherlock receives a package containing a DVD with the inscription Miss Me? (Do you miss me?) Is located. On it is a posthumous message from Mary. She instructs him to "save John Watson". The episode ends with Sherlock's thoughts on the story Appointment in Samarra . He wonders if death can be avoided.

In a post-credit scene , Mary says in an additional take on her DVD: "Go to hell, Sherlock".

Canon references

  • The episode is based on the story The Six Napoleons .
  • It contains elements from The Sign of Four (including Toby the dog) and The Yellow Face .
  • In a fast run-through of some cases, a jellyfish is accused as the perpetrator. This can be found in the canon story Die Löwenmähne .
  • At the beginning, Sherlock tells the story Appointment in Samarra (written by John O'Hara ).

Trivia

  • In this episode, John Watson is seen for the first time at the wheel of a car. He had never driven a vehicle before. This insider gag is based on a true story because Martin Freeman did not have a driver's license for a long time.
  • At minute 70 Toby Jones appears on a poster in the background.
  • The bloodhound Toby , shown in the following, was also rather cozy in reality and largely refrained from moving. As a result, Mark Gatiss wrote a new scene in the episode that shows this behavior.
  • The name Sherrinford , long suspected to refer to the third Holmes brother, is actually the name of a maximum security prison in which Eurus Holmes, Sherlock's sister, is guarded. Mycroft receives regular updates ("Sherrinford is secure") from this location to ensure that its sister is not at risk.
