The last problem (original title: The Final Problem ) is the third episode of the fourth season of the British television series Sherlock . The first broadcast was on January 15, 2017 on the BBC , the German-language premiere took place on June 11, 2017 on Das Erste .
action
A young girl wakes up on an airplane and is deeply concerned that everyone on board except her is unconscious. When a passenger's cell phone rings and she picks up the phone to ask for help, a male voice replies, "Hello, my name is Jim Moriarty, welcome to the last problem."
Mycroft is enjoying a vintage movie in the private cinema of his home. Suddenly the footage is disrupted by footage from his childhood and the ominous message “I'M BACK” before the film roll ends. He tries to leave, but finds the main door locked. Here are a few more effects that lead Mycroft to believe that his sister Eurus was behind all of this. When Mycroft panics, it finally turns out that it was all a trick by Sherlock and John to get Mycroft to tell stories about the secret third Holmes child, his and Sherlock's sister, as John thought Mycroft did not provide the information voluntarily would have given.
Back on Baker Street , Mycroft, as Sherlock's client, tells us that Eurus is the most intelligent of all the Holmes children, but also the most dangerous. Although Sherlock has no memory of Eurus, Mycroft tells him that every action and decision that Sherlock defines is based on Sherlock's memories of Eurus. Mycroft tells him about Eurus' childhood in Musgrave, where she lived at the time, and about her strange urge to explore. It turns out that she killed Redbart, a dog Sherlock owned when he was a child. After setting fire to her parents' home, she was given away. Sherlock and his parents were told that she perished in another fire. In reality, however, she was taken to the Sherrinford security facility , where she solves cases for the secret service and accurately predicts attacks based on a few clues. When Mycroft finishes his story, Eurus can be heard singing in Sherlock's apartment and a drone with a bomb on it flies into the room. This is triggered by movement, but only after three seconds. So Sherlock, John and Mycroft jump out of the window or run down the stairs so that they are safe during the explosion.
At sea, Sherlock and John are dropped off by a helicopter on a fishing boat, which they capture and drive to Sherrinford . Meanwhile, Mycroft is reported to have been rushed to hospital, seriously injured in the Baker Street explosion, with little hope of recovery. The boat captain and his assistant are found handcuffed by Sherrinford security officers on a nearby beach on the island. Next to them is a note written in the sand for Eurus. A fake captain and John are arrested because the chief of security believes he has seen through the fake captain's disguise and captured John and Sherlock. He gives a security card to a guard to check Eurus' whereabouts. The captain then removes his mask and it turns out that it was actually Mycroft who was hiding underneath and that the man who received the security card was Sherlock.
Disguised in this way, Sherlock sneaks past the guards and can visit Eurus. After she got Sherlock to step closer to the armored glass pane of her prison to tell him how she escaped, he realizes that there was never a pane there. Meanwhile, Mycroft is reviewing tapes of psychiatric sessions made without his consent; he had banned them because he knew about Eurus' ability to manipulate people. The head of security was also under Eurus' influence and therefore sounded the alarm. Mycroft, John and Sherlock are captured by guards. Before John is knocked down, he sees a picture of Moriarty's face on a screen that says "Did you miss me?"
In a flashback to Christmas five years ago, a helicopter flies to Sherrinford with Moriarty on board - on Mycroft's orders: Mycroft granted Eurus the Christmas wish to have an unsupervised five-minute conversation with Moriarty. During this time she had him record some audio and video sequences, e.g. B. the answer to the girl's question on the phone on the plane. Later, John wakes up with Sherlock, Mycroft and the head of security in a Sherrinford prison cell , what looks like old Eurus. They speak briefly to the girl from the plane before Eurus, who is communicating with them on a television, ends the connection. Sherlock then has to solve various puzzles in different rooms in order to prevent people from being harmed. However, this cannot always be prevented. For example, the security leader perishes. When Sherlock is supposed to decide whether to shoot Mycroft or John, he threatens Eurus to shoot himself and end their game. Before Sherlock can put his words into practice, tranquilizer arrows shoot out of the wall and Sherlock, John and Mycroft are taken away from Sherrinford .
Sherlock wakes up hours later in a cell with pictures on the walls. He is re-connected to the girl from the plane and then to John, who is chained in a well. Eurus gives Sherlock the task of solving his very first case, the Musgrave Ritual , in order to save John. At the same time, she describes this case as his “last problem”. At the same time as solving this case, Sherlock instructs the girl to land the plane, with which he decrypts the message of the cryptic song of Eurus. She explains to him that Red Beard cannot be a dog because her father is allergic to dogs. Redbeard is actually the nickname of his childhood best friend, Victor Trevor. Sherlock tried to replace the death of his friend with that of a dog to make the loss more bearable. At the same time John finds the bones of a child in the well. Sherlock realizes that the girl on the plane, which was a metaphor for her memory palace, is his sister Eurus, who calls for help out of loneliness. Sherlock gives her the love she wants, which she never received in her childhood. And he promises her to play with her, since no other children wanted to play with Eurus before. Then she reveals where John is and he is finally saved. Mycroft is found unharmed in Eurus' former cell in Sherrinford .
Eurus is then transferred back to Sherrinford . The Holmes brothers explain to their parents that Eurus is in a catatonic state and does not want to speak. Sherlock visits her in Sherrinford and keeps his promise by playing the violin with her. Upon his return, Sherlock and John are renovating his apartment on Baker Street . John receives an anonymous CD entitled "MISS YOU", which he watches with Sherlock. On it, his late wife, Mary, speaks a kind of epilogue to the television series in which she encourages the two to continue solving cases and going on adventures together.
production
The footage from the maximum security Sherrinford prison was filmed on St Catherine's Island , which is part of Tenby in Wales .
