Siegfried Wilhelm (von) Dehn , origin. Samuel Dehn , (born February 24, 1799 in Altona , † April 12, 1858 in Berlin ) was a German music theorist and counterpoint teacher .

Life

Dehn owes his first musical training to the Hamburg composer Paul Wineberger . From 1819 to 1823 he studied law in Leipzig and became a member of the Corps Saxonia Leipzig in 1820 . In addition, he worked as a music critic for the Leipziger Zeitung and received further music lessons from the organist Johann Andreas Dröbs . In 1823 he moved to Berlin, but worked in his father's bank until his bankruptcy in 1830. He then completed his musical training with Bernhard Klein and made music his profession. He soon became a sought-after counterpoint and composition teacher.

His music theory approach was based on the close connection between harmony and basso continuo . Michail Glinka describes his teaching style as follows: “Dehn, who recognized his student's abilities with a keen eye, refrained from pedantry and overly dry instruction in his lessons and had him write three and four-part fugues as an exercise, developing his taste and his music theory Knowledge organized. ”From 1837 to 1839 he also taught Clara Wieck when she was in Berlin.

Dehn privately collected music manuscripts that he acquired on extensive trips. On the recommendation of Alexander von Humboldt and Giacomo Meyerbeer , he became custodian of the music of the Royal Library in 1842 , and he made a significant contribution to the development and expansion of the library . He arranged for the inventory to be organized and cataloged, copies of musical works from other libraries in Prussia to be made and valuable collections and estates to be included in the library's holdings. In 1846 he acquired Anton Schindler 's Beethoven collection . He held the office until his death. His successor was Franz Espagne .

He emerged as an author of music theory works, e.g. In 1840, for example, he published the theoretical-practical theory of harmony , which at the same time is to be seen as an outline of the history of music since the time of Gregorian chant and mensural notation . He was one of the first who dealt with the translation of neumes into modern music notation. From 1842 to 1848 he was editor of the magazine Cäcilia .

As editor he concentrated on works by Orlando di Lasso and Johann Sebastian Bach , which he edited on the basis of the sources. He went beyond the previous practice, such as that used by Friedrich Konrad Griepenkerl . Together with Ignaz Moscheles , Louis Spohr u. a. Dehn was instrumental in founding the Bach Society in 1850 . He also worked from 1845 to 1847 as the successor of Eduard Grell as a singing teacher at the Royal Cathedral Choir Berlin . He was appointed professor in 1849, and in 1850 he was appointed a member of the Academy of Arts (Berlin) . From 1855 he taught at the New Academy of Music, which was founded by Theodor Kullak .

Siegfried Wilhelm Dehn died of a stroke in 1858 at the age of 59 and was buried in Berlin's Sophienfriedhof II . The grave has not been preserved.
