history

The area of Silver Lake was originally known as Ivanhoe , named after the novel Ivanhoe by Walter Scott . The reason was that the Scot Hugo Reid, who developed areas here, felt reminded of the hills of his homeland. From this period some streets in Silver Lake still have Scottish names, or names of characters from the novel Ivanhoe. From 1904 the area was connected to the railway system of the Electric Pacific Railroad . An area known as " Silver Lake's Stonehenge " reminds us of the connection to the rail network . These are the remains of the foundation of a railway bridge.

The Silver Lake Reservoir.

In 1907, William Mulholland built a dam to build a water reservoir to supply growing Los Angeles. The dam was completed in November 1907. The water filled the lower portion of Ivanhoe Canyon by March 1908, forming a reservoir that was christened Silver Lake in honor of the city's water commissioner, Herman Silver.

From 1910, film studios moved to what is known as Edendale, what is now Silver Lake. The most famous of these film studios today was the studio founded by Roy and Walt Disney that moved to Silverlake in 1923. Here, cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse were developed. In 1937, however , the Disney Studios moved to Burbank .

Glendale-Hyperion Bridge 1927.

1915 Glendale Avenue was completed and Silver Lake by a bridge over the Los Angeles River with Glendale connected.

The Mattachine Steps 2017.

In 1950, Harry Hay founded the Mattachine Society in Silver Lake , an early group that advocated LGBTQ rights. In honor of Hay, the staircase leading past his house was named Mattachine Steps in 2012 . Two years before the Stonewall riot in New York , similar riots took place outside the Black Cat in Silver Lake. On the morning of New Year's Day in 1967, several men were arrested by the police for kissing men in the pub. As a result, there were considerable demonstrations. The Black Cat Tavern on Sunset Boulevard has been a monument of the gay rights movement in Los Angeles ever since.

Culture

architecture

Richard Neutra's home.

The very hilly landscape of Silver Lake is home to numerous buildings of the classical modern with works by Rudolph Schindler , Richard Neutra and John Lautner . Worth mentioning are, for example, the silver top by John Lautner or the living and working house of Richard Neutra. The architectural jewels are mainly located in the Moreno Highlands, named after the silent film star Antonio Moreno . Moreno developed the area with his wife Daisy Canfield in the 1920s and 1930s . However, there are also some well-known buildings in the area that are not built in a modern style. The Moreno-Canfield Estate , built in 1923 in a non-modern style, has been the location for numerous films. The Faron Residence, built by Paul R. Williams in the Colonial Revival Style , is also located in the Moreno Highlands.

The Music Box Steps in 2009.

During the development at the beginning of the 20th century, the steep hills were connected by public stairs to Sunset Boulevard , which runs through the district . This significantly promotes walking in the area. Numerous stairs are decorated with paintings by different artists. One of the stairs in the district is the scene in 1932 with the Oscar winning short film The Music Box of Laurel and Hardy . The 133 steps leading from Vendome Street up to Descanso Drive are now called Music Box Steps and are marked with a plaque. The annual Music Box Steps Day festival , which is celebrated in nearby Laurel and Hardy Park , is also reminiscent of the film .

Museums

In Silver Lake is the Holyland Exhibition , a small historical museum that contains the collection of Antonia F. Futterer. Futterer was a possible real-life role model for the Indiana Jones character . He had traveled to the Middle East in search of the Ark of the Covenant . The five rooms of the Holyland Exhibition contain the Futterer's collection of antique objects that he brought back from his travels to biblical lands.

In 2014 the Neutra Institute Museum and Gallery opened in Silver Lake. It is housed in the Neutra Office Building .

education

There are numerous public and private schools in and around Silver Lake. The Silver Lake Conservatory of Music, founded by Michael Balzary in 2001, is worth mentioning . The conservatory is now housed in a warehouse from 1931, which was extensively renovated in 2016 and converted for the conservatory. The reason for the founding of the conservatory were deep cuts in the budget for music lessons in public schools in California.

The Los Angeles Public Library has a branch at 2411 Glendale Boulevard. The library building is influenced by Richard Neutra's aesthetic. The L-shaped building was erected over a park level. The facade is made of glass and sandstone to create transparency between inside and outside. The use of 168 solar cells on the roof should contribute to environmental friendliness. The inner courtyard with benches that are modeled on stacks of books was designed by Mia Lehrer. Opened in 2009, the library building was the first in the Los Angeles Public Library to feature automated book lending. The collection includes books on the architecture represented in Silver Lake, but also on the gay and lesbian scene.
