history

Frederick R. Simms, the founder and namesake 1903

In 1907, the Holzgau Section built the first hut, initially as a hunting lodge. The donor is the British industrialist and hunting tenant there, Frederick Richard Simms . In 1893, Simms asked the court in Vienna about a wild, romantic and beautiful hunting ground. Based on a personal recommendation from Emperor Franz Josef , Simms came to Holzgau in the upper Lechtal for the first time at the age of 30. There he went on many mountain tours and realized that a refuge was necessary. He then offered the Holzgau section of the DuOeAV to finance the construction. In 1907 the Simmshütte stood on an exposed place at a height of 2004 meters. A picture of the founder Frederick R. Simms hangs in the guest room. Robert Bosch's passion for hunting was awakened by Simms . The two business friends enjoyed meeting in the Lech Valley to hunt chamois. In 1924, the Stuttgart Section leased the already dilapidated refuge, but popular with mountaineers. After extensive renovation and expansion work, the hut had 16 mattress stores and a guest room. In 1938 the hut changed hands for 600 Reichsmarks: the Stuttgart section became the new owner.

In 1953 the hut was closed because the foundation showed considerable damage and the building was in danger of slipping. In the years 1956–1961 the Frederick-Simms-Hütte was rebuilt and can now be supplied with a material ropeway. In 1981 the newly built winter room is opened. Since then, the hut has been modernized, expanded and equipped with environmentally friendly technology in several steps. In 2002 it received the environmental seal of approval from the Alpine clubs.
