The Sioux GmbH ( dt .: IPA : [ziːʊks] ; Engl .: [SU] ) is a German shoe manufacturer .

history

The founding couple Karin and Peter Sapper

The company was founded in 1954 by Peter Sapper in Württemberg City Walheim founded. His idea was to manufacture the moccasin in Germany. The company name Sioux is derived from the North American Indian peoples of the same name , whose preferred footwear was the moccasin. The motif of the Indian can be seen in the advertising for the company and in its online presence . In addition to the moccasins, Sioux developed the autoped for motorists in 1957 and the Grashopper , a casual shoe, in 1964 . Moccasin , Sacchetto , San Crispino , Ago , California and Flexibel are used in shoe production .

From 1992 to 2003 Sioux was a subsidiary of Kornwestheimer Salamander GmbH , which in turn belonged to EnBW as a subsidiary from 2000 . In 2002 Sioux opened its own shop in Stuttgart. Since then, the company has operated its own Sioux boutiques in Düsseldorf, Essen, Wuppertal, Hanover, Flensburg and Kleve. Sioux also has its own online shop. Sioux factory outlets are located in Hauenstein, Bietigheim-Bissingen and Weiterstadt.

Over the years, Sioux had "gained a considerable position in its home market of Germany", which, however, had to be increasingly defended against aggressive competitors from the 1990s . Salamander was sold to Garant Schuh und Mode AG , Düsseldorf , in spring 2003 after EnBW wanted to part with its shoe division. However, the sale did not include the Sioux brands and the men's shoe brand Apollo , which has been part of Sioux since 1998 , and which were both in the black in the 2002 financial year. At the end of 2003, EganaGoldpfeil in Offenbach am Main bought Sioux GmbH including the Apollo brand from EnBW. After Garant Schuh und Mode AG went bankrupt in September 2004 due to the Salamander takeover , Salamander also reported insolvency and was also taken over by EganaGoldpfeil in March 2005. In August 2008, EganaGoldpfeil Europe (Holdings) GmbH went into bankruptcy, whereupon its creditors also asserted their claims against all Egana subsidiaries - including Sioux.

Sioux: Equipment for the German team for the 2012 Summer Olympics

Since the beginning of 2009 Sioux GmbH has belonged to the holding company Square Four Investments from Frankfurt am Main , to which, in addition to some furniture manufacturers, the shoe manufacturer Erich Rohde Shoes (founded in Guben in 1862 , four million shoes produced per year, insolvency 2007, sales 2008: 80 million euros) in Schwalmstadt .

Despite the takeovers, Sioux always remained an independent company in the respective groups. In November 2009 there was a report of the impending bankruptcy of “the basically healthy company” Sioux due to company pension commitments. With the majority of creditors relinquishing 65% of their claims and a guarantee from the state of Baden-Württemberg , the bankruptcy was averted in mid-2010, although the Pension Security Association , which made the pension commitments made by the previous owners of Sioux from the 1960s and 70s to the Would have had to finance employees in the event of Sioux bankruptcy, had refused to take over part of the Sioux employees' company pensions.

Sioux's sales in 2009 were around EUR 40 million. Approx. One million shoes are made every year. The design of the shoes and the sample production take place in Walheim, production is mainly in the company's own factory in Lousada , Portugal , or in Asia, e.g. in India . Until the 1990s there was a Sioux production facility in Schrozberg . The ratio of men's shoes (60%) to women's shoes (40%) is to be shifted at Sioux in favor of women's shoes in the coming years.

In addition to its own brand, the company has had the men's shoe brand Apollo in its portfolio since 1998 . In addition, Sioux has been creating, producing and selling shoes, leather goods and accessories for the Joop! . Joop! renewed this license with the Sioux subsidiary LAG Leder und Accessoires GmbH at the beginning of 2010. However, since 2012 only the license for Joop! Shoes at LAG; the license for handbags and small leather goods was granted by Joop! otherwise assigned. In 2010, Daniel Hechter granted a license for bags and belts to Sioux, for which Rohde Shoes has been producing shoes since 1996.

From 1972 to 2016 Sioux was also the outfitter for the German Olympic team. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , Sioux provided not only the German but also the Austrian (for the 6th time) and Luxembourg teams with shoes. The winter athletes of the DSV (German Ski Association) have been wearing Sioux shoes since 2006. In 2016, Sioux criticized the development of the Olympics - including the inadequate fight against doping - and did not plan to extend the contract with the DOSB any further. Because of the criticism, the DOSB unilaterally terminated the contract without notice.

In addition to specialist retailers in Germany and the European region, Sioux has 25 mono-brand shops worldwide. Sioux produces and sells women's and men's shoes for the business and leisure sector. The company employs around 360 people.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic , which, according to the company, had a negative impact on sales development, the company had to file for bankruptcy on its own responsibility and hopes to be able to "make the ship seaworthy again", according to Managing Director Lewin Berner, who ins Company had entered, stated in the interview.

Sioux models

Autoped

The autoped was the first concept shoe specifically for motorists. A grooved sole and a raised rubber crepe heel improved the grip on the pedals and increased safety and comfort. The most prominent carrier of the autoped was the legendary racing driver Fritz Huschke von Hanstein (1911–1996). A new edition of the Sioux Autoped was planned for 2009, but never appeared.

Intarsia

The Intarsia was another innovation by Peter Sapper in 1958. The special thing about this model was the studded sole (leather sole with rubber studs), which was a model for many other shoe manufacturers and is still today.

Grasshopper

The Grashopper was launched by Peter Sapper in 1964. The anatomical shaped casual shoe has been sold over 10 million times worldwide. In 1970 the English shoe manufacturer Clarks acquired the license for the Grashopper in order to sell the shoe under the name "Wallabee".
