Graham William Walker (born April 4, 1963 in Clondalkin ), better known by his stage name Graham Norton , is an Irish actor , television presenter , comedian and author .

Norton was born in Clondalkin, a suburb of Dublin , in 1963 and grew up in Bandon , County Cork, in the south of the Republic of Ireland . His family is Protestant . His father's family is from County Wicklow while his mother is from Belfast .

He completed his education at the Bandon Grammar School in West Cork and at University College Cork (UCC), where he studied English and French for two years during the 1980s, but never finished his studies. After graduating, Norton lived in San Francisco for some time and then moved to the United Kingdom , where he studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama .

In 1988 Norton was attacked on the street in London. The attackers beat and stabbed him; According to his own statements, he lost almost half of his blood and was seriously injured. Norton had to be hospitalized for two and a half weeks after the attack. Norton later processed the attack comedically several times in his programs; However, when he was supposed to record a Christmas clip for the BBC near the crime scene in 2013 (unintentionally by the producers) , he felt disturbed by the memories.

In June 2013 he received an honorary doctorate from University College Cork; he regularly ironically mentions this award on his radio show on BBC Radio 2 to win discussions by referring to his doctoral degree.

Norton was in a relationship with Trevor Patterson from 2010 to 2013.

In October 2014, Norton published his second memoir, The Life and Loves of a He Devil . The book won the Irish Book Award 2014 in the Non-Fiction Book of the Year category .

Norton lives in London and owns a holiday home in Ahakista , County Cork, on Dunmanus Bay . The house has a private beach and is near Bandon, where he spent his childhood.

Career

Norton first appeared on the radio on BBC Radio 4 in the early 1990s, hosting the show Loose Ends early Saturday morning.

In 1992, Norton made a splash when he appeared as a transsexual version of Mother Teresa at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival because the Scottish Religious Affairs division mistakenly assumed he was representing the real Mother Teresa.

He became known to the general public in the sitcom Father Ted , in which he played the priest Noel Furlong.

Norton has won the BAFTA award six times so far . The formats he developed and moderated include So Graham Norton , V Graham Norton , The Graham Norton Effect , Graham Norton's Bigger Picture , the talk show format The Graham Norton Show and Would You Rather ...? with Graham Norton .

Graham Norton moderated the Eurovision Dance Contest 2007 in London and the Eurovision Dance Contest 2008 in Glasgow. In addition, Graham Norton will replace Sir Terry Wogan in 2009 as moderator of the English preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow “Your country needs you”, as well as commentator for the BBC during the song contest. Together with the Swedish presenter Petra Mede , host of the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 , he hosted the program Eurovision's Greatest Hits , which the BBC hosted in London at the end of March 2015 on the occasion of the ESC's 60th anniversary.

In 2016 Norton published his debut novel Holding , which was published a year later in German under the title An Irish Village Policeman by Kindler. The book won the Irish Book Award for best novel of 2016.
