The Spanish national rugby team of seven represents Spain in the sport of rugby sevens (Spanish: rugby a siete or seven ), a variant of rugby union . The selection is subject to the Federación Española de Rugby (FER).

history

The Spanish national team can look back on better results in rugby 7 than in rugby 15 . So far you could qualify four times for the Seventh Rugby World Cup organized by World Rugby ; 1993 , 1997 , 2001 and 2013 . The best result was achieved in 1993 when the selection finished the tournament in sixth place overall.

The Spanish national team occasionally took part in the European tournaments of the World Rugby Sevens Series . In the 2007/08 season, the Spaniards were able to win the Shield competition in the London Sevens after beating Russia in the semi-finals and Kenya in the final . In Edinburgh Sevens the Spaniards in the group stage sat surprisingly against Canada by and defeated in the quarter-final of the Bowl and Moldova . Only in the semifinals did the Spaniards fail at the eventual bowl winner Australia. A great success in the IRB Sevens World Series was achieved in March 2012 when the Iberians finished the qualifying tournament held as part of the Hong Kong Sevens for the following season behind Canada in second place and thus belonged to the fifteen core teams in the 2012/13 season , which deny all nine tournaments of the series. In the last competition of the 2011/12 season, the London Sevens, the Spaniards reached the quarter-finals of the Cup for the first time in history after victories in the group matches against Wales and Zimbabwe .

In the 2012/13 season of the World Series, Spain finished 15th. So they had to take part in the qualifying tournament at the London Sevens 2013 in order to remain core team . This succeeded with the semi-final victory against Portugal. Also in 2013/14 the Spaniards reached 15th place, but due to the new relegation regulation they had to relegate directly. It was not until 2017 that the qualification as a core team succeeded again with the final victory of the qualifying tournament at the Hong Kong Sevens against Germany . In the following season the Spaniards achieved their best result so far with 11th place.

At the Sevens Rugby European Championships organized by FIRA-AER in 2009 in Hanover , the Spaniards came fourth behind Russia, France and Italy. A year later, the placement could be repeated in Moscow , this time the Iberians ended up behind Portugal, France and hosts Russia. In the 2011 season, the European Championship was held for the first time as a series of four tournaments. The Spaniards achieved two second and one third place and finished the European Championship just behind Portugal and England in third place.
