The north of Pegnitz-Kuppenalb located village is one of 23 officially designated districts in Upper Franconia town of Betzenstein. It is located about five kilometers south-southwest of Betzenstein and is at an altitude of 556  m above sea level. NHN .

history

As a result of the administrative reforms carried out in the Kingdom of Bavaria at the beginning of the 19th century , the village became an independent rural community, which also included the parish of Riegelstein as the seat of the community, the villages of Eichenstruth and Illafeld , and the wasteland of Eibenthal . The hamlet of Schermshöhe , created in the second half of the 19th century, was added later. In the course of the municipal territorial reform carried out in Bavaria in the 1970s , the entire municipality of Spies was incorporated into the city of Betzenstein on January 1, 1972. In 1987 Spies had 145 inhabitants.

Remains of the Spies castle stable

Immediately north of the local area of ​​Spies are the remains of the Spies castle stable on the 616 meter high summit area of ​​the Spieser Schloßberg . In the Bavarian list of monuments, this ground monument, recorded as the medieval castle stables, is listed with the number D-4-6334-0005. In addition, about 700 meters east-southeast, on the summit plateau of the Hohen Reut , is the Riegelstein telecommunications tower . This can be reached directly from Spies via a hiking trail, as well as from the neighboring Schermshöhe. From there, both a hiking trail and a narrow access road lead up to the summit area.
