The Sportpark Nord is a sports and recreation areas in the Bonn district of northern city at the Cologne road . With over 160,000 square meters, the Sportpark Nord, inaugurated in 1970, is the largest sports facility in Bonn.

history

The sports park was built from 1967 to 1970 according to plans by the Bonn architect Ernst van Dorp and the garden architect Wolfgang Darius. It replaced the sports facilities of the city of Bonn in the Gronau on the edge of the parliament and government district , which the federal government had acquired from the city in 1966 for the construction of new parliament buildings for 90 million DM , from which the construction of the sports park was financed. The site had previously been used as a rubbish dump and was lowered by means of gravel before the stadium was built . Together with the Lindenhof residential park to the northwest , the sports park was built as part of an overall concept for the urban upgrading of the north of Bonn. An arched pedestrian bridge was built in 1968/69 to connect the part of the sports park north and south of the 565 federal motorway . The North Sports Park was opened on September 23, 1970; The fencing performance center could not be handed over to the German Fencing Federation until November 12, 1971 .

On February 25, 1982, a new fencing hall (triple hall) was inaugurated in the North Sports Park. Since September 2016, an artificial turf field has been built instead of a tennis court and an archery range has been built instead of a football field that is not used for noise protection reasons.

Stadion

In the southern part of the sports park is the soccer stadium with a grass field and athletic plastic facilities. The grandstand has 2,628 covered seats, 2,496 covered standing places and 5,040 uncovered standing places. The stadium became famous in the 1970s for the excellent performances of the Bonn athletes. The football club Bonner SC played here in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1970s . The team from Japan used the Sportpark Nord as a training facility for the 2006 World Cup .

In the 2016/17 season, Bonner SC competed in the Regionalliga West . In order to meet the requirements of the regional league, various renovations were carried out on the North Sports Park in the summer of 2009. This includes the restructuring of the escape routes and the guest area. The standing area was renewed and modernized. The seat shells and ticket booths in the main stand were also renewed or replaced. During the 2009/10 season, the sports park was to receive new floodlights and a digital video and display board. However, due to the uncertain future of Bonner SC and the cessation of game operations due to the insolvency of the club, further work in the stadium was initially postponed. During the summer break in 2011, work finally continued and the stadium was equipped with four TV-compatible floodlight masts.

A photovoltaic system with an installed capacity of 130 KW is located on the roof of the grandstand .
