history

The church used to belong to the monastery of St. Alban of the Cluniac Order . Previous sacred buildings existed as early as 1083 . The church was built around 1270 and redesigned several times in the Middle Ages . It is unclear which holy Alban it is dedicated to. Suitable: Alban of Mainz and Alban of England , both as martyrs were beheaded. A monastery seal from 1256 shows the saint with a palm branch as a sign of the martyr and a severed head. However, a list of martyrs from the 9th century names a «Basler Alban» with 23 May as the day of remembrance, which corresponds neither to the day of remembrance of the English nor that of the Alban from Mainz. It is therefore conceivable that the patron is a third, “native” Alban.

In 1845 a major change took place when the front half of the nave and the south aisle were demolished by Johann Jakob Stehlin the Younger . The west facade , partly fitted with original parts from 1270, and the plastered wooden vaults of the nave date from 1845. The current appearance is largely shaped by the "Stehlin conversion" from 1845.

The last exterior renovation took place in 1911. The St. Alban's Church belongs to the church district of the Münster parish of Basel , which, however, no longer holds services at this location today . The church building was rented from 1971 to 2003 to the Metropolitan Region of Switzerland in the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and today to the Serbian Orthodox Church . This regularly celebrates church services there.

The Metzler organ on the gallery was completely rebuilt in 1966 and is now used by the City of Basel's Music Academy for teaching purposes .
