St. Elisabeth (Planegg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Elisabeth is the Catholic parish church of the Upper Bavarian community Planegg in the district of Munich .

history

Until the beginning of the 20th century , the people of Planegger were looked after by the parish church in Martinsried . The first efforts to build a separate church for the much larger Planegg date back to 1880 . The barons of Hirsch wanted to provide the building site free of charge.

It was not until 1920 that the building of the church actually began. A wooden riding hall provided free of charge by the Third Order (previously owned by Countess Tattenbach from Eurasburg near Wolfratshausen ) was set up in Planegg as a nave . The high altar was acquired second-hand from the Regensburg Cathedral . A small turret with two bells was placed on the roof of the hall . On September 25, 1921 , this emergency church was consecrated by Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber . In 1933 a church tower with five bells was built by Karl Hamm, Regensburg. Out of gratitude to the Third Order and to Baron von Hirsch, whose two wives bore this name, the church received the patronage of Elisabeth of Thuringia .

In 1967 plans began to replace the previous emergency church with a new building. The very functional, straight building in the style of the 1970s was consecrated on December 17, 1972 by Julius Döpfner in the presence of the then Bavarian Prime Minister Alfons Goppel . The existing tower was preserved next to the new church, but provided with horizontal blue stripes on a gray background; since then the Planeggers call it “striped socks”.

The church tower, called "Ringelsocken"

The parish house, which was built together with the church, was completely renovated and redesigned in 2009 and 2010. In addition to several renovation measures to optimize the function, the main focus was on the energetic overhaul. The total costs amounted to around 1.7 million euros, 60% of which was borne by the Archdiocese of Munich and 40% by the parish. The political communities of Planegg and Krailling as well as the Charlotte and Herrmann-Schober Foundation played a decisive role in raising this amount.
