General
Originally there was no church in Floßdorf. A first chapel could be created in 1817 by a foundation of the married couple Josef and Katharina Engels, born. Daniels, to be built. At that time the place belonged to the parish of St. Martinus Barmen . In 1823, Floßdorf received its own clergyman for the first time.
In 1866 Floßdorf was separated from the mother parish of Barmen and raised to an independent parish .
Building history
The chapel, built in 1816, was replaced by a new church between 1863 and 1864, which became a parish church in 1866. During the Second World War , the parish church was blown up by German troops on November 30, 1944 and completely destroyed.
After the ruins of the destroyed church had been removed, the current parish church could be built between 1953 and 1954. The Linnich architect Werner Finkeldei made the plans . The solemn consecration took place on June 8, 1954.
Building description
St. Hermann Josef is a single-nave hall church from brick in five windows. The church building is not east-facing as usual, but has a north-south orientation. The bell tower is built in front of the nave in the south, has four storeys and is crowned by a tent roof. The choir is attached to the nave in the north and is rectangular. The interior is spanned by a slightly curved wooden ceiling. The windows are all arched.
Furnishing
There is modern equipment in the interior. Only the font from 1772 survived the destruction and could be taken over into the new church. The 14 Stations of the Cross are mosaics by a Munich artist from 1962. The stained glass windows in the choir are works by Ernst Jansen-Winkeln and the windows in the nave were designed by Friedrich Oidtmann by the company Dr. H. Oidtmann from Linnich.
Maria-Hilf octave
The Maria-Hilf-Oktav has been held every June since 1872. The octave celebration was brought into being in 1872 by the then pastor Wilhelm Limbach. The reason was the purchase of a copy of the image of grace from Perpetual Help . The octave celebration always lasts eight days and is attended by pilgrims from the surrounding communities. The week has a specific theme every year.
