Neo-Gothic bell tower

The Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist in Altmühlmünster , today a district of the town of Riedenburg in the Lower Bavarian district of Kelheim , is a former commandery church of the Order of St. John . The building is a hall with a Romanesque core and a late Gothic choir from the 15th century. In the years 1911 to 1913 the church was extended to the west according to plans by the architect Heinrich Hauberrisser and the tower was built in the neo-Gothic style. The church that is consecrated to John the Baptist is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

Today's parish church was originally the religious order of the Altmühlmünster monastery founded in 1155 by Count Heinrich and Otto von Riedenburg . In 1558 the monastery became a branch of the Templar Order and after its abolition in 1312 it was handed over to the Knights of St. John. In the course of secularization , the commandery was dissolved in 1808 and the church was used as a parish church.

architecture

Exterior construction

To the north of the choir stands the high tower, covered with a gable roof , in whose bell storey triple-coupled sound arcades with slender columns are cut. On the north side of the nave is the sacristy , which, like the choir, was built in the 15th century. At the south portal, which is integrated into a groin arched sign , two Romanesque fighters have been preserved, which are decorated with chessboard ornament , dew-stick and arched frieze.

The interior consists of a single nave , flat-roofed nave and a retracted choir with a five-eighth end . Like the two late Gothic side chapels in the nave, the choir has a ribbed vault , the ribs of which are profiled with pear rods and throats. The western end of the nave is formed by a gallery resting on pillars , on which the organ is installed and the bulging parapet is decorated with stucco decoration.

Stucco and ceiling painting

The stucco decor of the nave ceiling was carried out around 1700. The frame stucco is combined with angel heads, fruit containers and leaf decoration. The frescoes were renewed at a later time. The Last Supper is shown on the central ceiling painting . The medallions on the side contain scenes from the Old Testament such as the Manna rain , the return of the spies from the land of Canaan with the bunch of calebs and the sacrifice of Isaac .

Furnishing

  • Above the chancel a is locust bowl with the severed head of the church patron mounted. It is dated to the middle of the 15th century.
  • Only the carved figure of John the Baptist from the early 16th century remains from the former high altar .
  • The apostles John and John the Baptist are depicted on two former altar wings from the early 16th century .
  • The two side altars in the side chapels date from around 1700. In the altar niche of the left side chapel is a Pietà , in the niche of the right side chapel stands the apostle Andrew , who can be recognized by the St. Andrew's cross .
  • The wood-carved pulpit is also a work from around 1700. Jesus as the Good Shepherd and the evangelists with their symbols are depicted on the pulpit .

Tombstones

Numerous tombstones from the 14th to 18th centuries are embedded in the walls and floor. The coat of arms stone for Dietrich Schenk von Flügelsberg († 1347) reminds us that the former Johanniterkirche served as a burial place for the taverns of Flügelsberg .
