St. John Capistran

The former Catholic Church of St. John Capistran , designed by Reinhard Hofbauer , stood in the corner Götzstraße 65 Felix Street in the Berlin district of Tempelhof the district Tempelhof-Schöneberg . The church was built in 1968 and demolished in 2005.

history

In the post-war period , Berlin was a special place for post-war modernism , especially for churches that shape the cityscape . The sale and demolition were related to the financial crisis of the archdiocese , which had to part with real estate . The Tempelhof district office issued a permit for the demolition of the church and the other buildings. The property, on which a nursing home and senior citizens' apartments were to be built, was sold by the Archdiocese of Berlin for 2.5 million euros.

The Berlin Monument Advisory Board had on 8 July 2005 the Berlin Monument Authority proposed the building complex of St. John Capistran, the buildings of the 1986 resolution monastery of Franciscans and the dorm in the monument list take to get there. However, the State Monuments Office did not get the chance to put the church under monument protection , although the state curator considered it valuable in terms of architectural history . In talks with the archbishopric, the head of the monument office tried to find a common solution for all churches up for sale or desecration . The churches have a duty to preserve their places of worship. When looking for a new use, there should be no taboos , in the USA or the Netherlands discos , savings banks , supermarkets or restaurants are moving into the church walls. For the Catholic Church, however, commercial use is only permitted if it does not run counter to the character of the building, so various possible uses were out of the question.

Building description

The irregularly laid out building ensemble consisted of four building wings , the reinforced concrete skeleton structure of a three-aisled basilica and the masonry structures that enclosed the monastery courtyard. The structure of the central nave and the choir of the basilica consecrated to Johannes Capistranus had a parabolic floor plan . It was surrounded by trapezoidal aisles. The entrance hall was under a windowless, tower-like porch in which the gallery for the organ was located. A little to one side stood the bell-less campanile made of concrete boxes piled crosswise, which looked like a monument .

organ

In the church there was an older, small organ since 1983, which was built around 1920 by the company W. Sauer (owner Dr. Oscar Walcker) . The organ was most likely inherited for a private household or school and was probably in a rather low room at the time. At a later point in time (possibly as early as the end of the 1960s) the organ was installed in the neighboring church of St. Judas Thaddäus (Berlin-Tempelhof) and in this context the layout was probably changed significantly. Since the new Hillebrand organ was built in St. Judas Thaddäus in 1983, the small Sauer organ was moved to St. Johannes Capistran. In 1995 the organ builder Karl Schuke (Berlin) carried out repairs. The Church of St. Johannes Capistran was abandoned and demolished in 2004/05. The current whereabouts or state of preservation of the Sauer organ is unknown.

The instrument has 7 registers on pneumatic pocket drawers and the disposition was as follows:
