Parish Church of St. Mary

St. Marien is the Roman Catholic parish church in Querum , a district of Braunschweig . Your parish of the same name belongs to the Braunschweig deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church named after St. Mary is located at 3 Köterei Street .

history

After the number of Catholics in northeastern Braunschweig increased after 1935 through the construction of the Schunteriedlung , the Vorwerkiedlung and the establishment of the Lower Saxony Motor Works , the Hildesheim diocese acquired a property with a restaurant and hall in 1938. When the renovation of the hall was due to begin, it was confiscated for "war reasons" and intended for the storage of grain. Only after France began an offensive against the Saar area in September 1939 and Saarlanders were evacuated into the interior of the Reich area, the hall could be used for church purposes as part of pastoral care for this group of people. In 1940 it was converted into an emergency church, which was consecrated on May 2, 1940. This emergency church was, after St. Nicolai , St. Joseph and St. Laurentius , the fourth Catholic church in Braunschweig, which was built after the Reformation . Its first priest was Franz Frese, who later became the provost of Brunswick . The Vicarie St. Marien was founded around 1940 . From 1940 Catholic church records were kept at St. Marien . On February 21, 1944, the emergency church was badly damaged by a bomb attack on Querum, which was presumably aimed at Waggum Airport , but could still be used. The Protestant church , on the other hand, could no longer be used, as a result of which the Catholic community made its emergency church available for Protestant services.

The first church was replaced by the current church because the building had been in disrepair since 1958. On January 1, 1962, the parish of St. Marien was established. On May 30, 1962, the last service took place in the emergency church. The building was demolished in 1962 and the current church was built in the same place. During the construction phase of the church, services were held in the auditorium of the Querum elementary and secondary school.

On 14 October 1962, the foundation stone for the new church was laid by Provost Franz Frese, and took place on December 8, 1963 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen her consecration .

Since November 1, 2006, the parish of St. Marien also includes the churches of St. Don Bosco in Hondelage and St. Martin in Wendhausen . As a result, the number of parishioners rose from just under 3400 to over 5500.

On April 2, 2018 (Easter Monday) the last St. Mass celebrated in the church, the renovation began on April 3, 2018. During the construction work in the church building, the services took place in the old church Querum . The renovation was finished on the 1st of Advent 2018. The artist Lilian Moreno Sánchez from Chile designed a new altar , which was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Heinz-Günter Bongartz , as well as a new ambo and a new baptismal font . The pews were replaced by chairs and an extract from the Magnificat was placed on the floor.

Architecture and equipment

The church, which is around 72 meters above sea level , is due to structural conditions not facing east, but north, and has 362 seats. The four bells were installed back in 1963. The picture on the altar wall shows Mary filled with the Holy Spirit ; it was designed by Claus Kilian in 1994 . The organ was built in 1968 by Gebrüder Hillebrand Orgelbau and was later expanded. The second smaller organ, also built by Hillebrand, dates from 1963 and was in the St. Nikolai Church in Melverode until 2002 . The Lady Chapel is located under the top of the church, crowned with a cross.

day care center

Next to the church is the St. Marien Catholic day care center, which was expanded in 2011 to include a day nursery. The day care center has been sponsored by Caritas since the beginning of 2013 . Today around 75 children are looked after in four groups.

Alois Hafkemeyer

The St. Marien Church was built according to plans by the Brunswick architect Alois Hafkemeyer. According to his design, the churches of St. Norbert (Grasleben) and Corpus Christi (Rotenburg (Wümme)) had already been built two years earlier , and later he designed St. Elisabeth (Salzgitter) , St. Bernward (Braunschweig) , the ecumenical center St. Stephanus (Lüneburg) and St. Maximilian Kolbe (Salzgitter) . Hafkemeyer, born in 1929, was himself a member of the St. Marien Congregation and councilor of the city of Braunschweig; he had a fatal accident in 1986.
