The Catholic branch church St. Nikolaus in Oberkirch , a district of Füssen in the Bavarian district of Ostallgäu , is a late Gothic building from the first half of the 15th century, which was redesigned in the early Baroque style in the early 17th century . The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra . Valuable pieces of equipment from the Gothic and Baroque periods have been preserved in the church. The building is a protected monument .

history

The church is mentioned for the first time in a document from 1420. The current church structure has largely been preserved from this period. In 1617 the interior was redesigned, as evidenced by the year on the choir arch . The windows on the originally windowless north side were probably broken through in the course of these renovations. The altars and the pulpit were not installed until 1665. In 1765 the tower was raised by an octagon with an onion dome.

architecture

In the northern corner of the choir is the low, square bell tower. The octagonal structure is structured by blending fields into which large sound arcades rounded at the top and bottom are cut.

The single nave nave has a flat wooden ceiling. The choir, which is closed on five sides , is broken up by pointed arched windows and is covered with a ribbed vault. A gallery , which was built in in the 17th century, forms the western end of the nave .

Murals

The remains of wall paintings dating from the second half of the 15th century have been preserved in the choir. A wall painting on the choir arch depicts St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the church. The choir vault is decorated with tendrils, St. Nicholas is depicted with the three golden spheres on the keystone , and consecration crosses are painted on the walls .

The painted putti that surround the crucifix on the north wall of the nave and which seem to collect in goblets the blood that flows from the wounds of the crucified Christ probably date from the 17th century.

Gallery

The fields of the gallery parapet are decorated with paintings that are dated to the middle of the 17th century. They depict the four evangelists , St. Joachim , the third of Anna and the coronation of Mary .

Furnishing

High altar
  • The high altar was created by the sculptor Andreas Steinheubl from Füssen. The dedicatory inscription with the year 1655 is preserved on the reverse. The altarpiece is by Gabriel Neckher and is painted on wood. It depicts a crucifixion group with Mary and John, on the side wings you can see St. Ulrich of Augsburg and St. Wolfgang of Regensburg , in the excerpt St. Nicholas with his attributes , the three golden balls. The predella shows a Pietà with Maria Magdalena in the middle and Saint Veronica with the handkerchief on the left . Angels stand on the right and left with the instruments of suffering .
  • The north side altar was created around 1660 by Franz Steinheubl, the son of Andreas Steinheubl. The altarpiece by Gabriel Neckher shows the birth of Christ, the excerpt shows the Annunciation and the predella shows the Adoration of the Magi . The smaller scenes on the side of the pedestals depict St. Magnus von Füssen with the dragon at his feet on the left and St. Martin with the beggar on the right .
  • The southern side altar, an altar of Mary, is a work by Hans Peter Schonger from 1661. The main picture of the altar is a picture of Maria-Hilf. The inscription on the upper edge shows the year 1661 and contains an invocation of Mary. The text at the bottom, presumably a prayer, is barely legible. The excerpt from Gabriel Neckher shows God the Father . On the predella you can see the poor souls in purgatory , for whom St. Dominic on the left and St. Catherine of Siena pray the rosary on the right .
  • The carved wood pulpit is marked with the year 1660. An arm with a cross in its hand protrudes from its parapet.
  • The late Gothic crucifix opposite the pulpit is dated around 1500.
  • The two candlestick angels under the cross come from the same time.
  • The pictures of the Stations of the Cross painted on wood date from the 18th century.
