The Catholic parish church of St. Petrus and Paulus in Petzenhausen, a district of Weil in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech , is essentially a late Gothic building that was redesigned in the Rococo style in the middle of the 18th century . The church is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

The parish of Petzenhausen, which was subject to tax at the Benedictine monastery of Wessobrunn , is documented as early as 1149 . Today's church with its walled cemetery dates from the late Gothic period, as indicated by the masonry that is still in the core. After the previous wooden tower structure had been destroyed, the upper part of the tower was renewed in 1725/26 by the Wessobrunn master builder Joseph Schmuzer (1683–1752). Between 1748 and 1755 the dilapidated church was extensively renovated, also initially under the direction of Joseph Schmuzer. The stucco decor was made around 1750 by his son Franz Xaver Schmuzer .

architecture

Exterior construction

The bell tower, crowned by tail gables and covered with a gable roof, in the northern corner of the choir is structured by strong cornices and glare fields, and in the upper structure also by pilasters . The arched sound arcades are surrounded by curved frames, above which four-pass openings are cut into the walls. The sacristy is attached to the choir in the east . On the south side of the nave there is a sign with a pent roof and arched portal . The door frame and the door leaf are decorated with rococo carvings from the 18th century. Epitaphs of pastors from the 19th century are embedded in the outer wall of the southern nave .

The single-nave nave is divided into three axes and is covered by a flattened needle cap barrel. Between the flat, with Rocaille capitals decorated Doppelpilastern open into the nave high walls, of window surrounds framed arched windows. The retracted, semicircular closed choir has two window axes and a longitudinally oval mirror vault . On both sides of the high altar oratorios with overlying stucco medallions are incised, on which the Heart of Mary is depicted on the left and the Heart of Jesus on the right . A double gallery supported by bulging columns forms the western end of the nave .

Ceiling frescoes

Choir fresco

The nave fresco , executed by Sebastian Jaud in 1820 , is dedicated to the two church patrons , the apostles Peter and Paul , and represents their martyrdom. The ceiling fresco in the choir represents the handing over of the keys to the apostle Peter. It was painted over by Sebastian Jaud in 1820 and was painted over in 1932 exposed again. Like the emblematic representations in the choir and nave, it was created by an unknown artist around 1760. The smaller, emblematic pictures in the choir depict two scenes from the life of the apostle Peter, his calling as a fisherman of men and his doubts when Jesus walked across the water, as well as John the Baptist and Moses with the brazen serpent . The emblematic representations in the nave refer to the apostle Peter as the rock of the church.

The fine Rococo stucco by Franz Xaver Schmuzer consists mainly of rocaille shapes and festoons . The light gray, in places gilded stucco ornaments are mostly attached to a light pink, sometimes also to a yellow background.

Furnishing

pulpit
  • The two-column high altar made of stucco marble is a work by Franz Xaver Schmuzer, the carved figures on the side of the church patron, the apostles Peter and Paul, are by Franz Xaver Schmädl .
  • The classicist side altars, also made of stucco marble, were created in 1801 by the Wessobrunn plasterer Michael Sporer. The two altar leaves , on the left the Resurrection of Christ and on the right the Adoration of the Magi , were probably made by Sebastian Jaud. The two assistant figures on the right altar represent Saint Wendelin and Saint Notburga . Popes Urban and Sylvester are on the side of the left altar and the late Gothic carved figure of Saint Sebastian , which is dated around 1480, is on the cafeteria .
  • The marbled Rococo pulpit is decorated with partially gold-plated reliefs of putti . The sound cover is crowned by a putto and the tablets of the law.
  • Two marble epitaphs from 1779 and 1798 are reminiscent of former pastors.
