St. Remigius in Wassenach, with old and new tower

The Catholic Church of St. Remigius in Wassenach , a local community in the Ahrweiler district ( Rhineland-Palatinate ), is a church building erected in 1851/52.

history

Wassenach originally belonged to the parish in Nickenich and since 1804 to the parish in Burgbrohl . At the request of the Catholic residents of Löhndorf, Bishop Wilhelm Arnoldi finally set up an independent parish in Wassenach in 1844. Then immediately began planning a new church.

A first chapel in Wassenach is mentioned as early as 1322. A tower from her is still preserved today, the smaller of the two church towers of St. Remigius. The new tower was completed in 1898.

The new parish church, built according to the plans of the Koblenz architect Ferdinand Nebel , was completed in 1852. She is the St. Consecrated to Remigius . A relief above the portal shows how St. Remigius, the patron of the church, baptizes the converted Frankish king Clovis I on Christmas 496. The three- aisled hall church was built in the neo-Romanesque style, in keeping with the taste of the time.

Furnishing

The altar , ambo , cross and Easter candlestick are made of shell limestone and bronze . They are works by Hans Gerhard Biermann from the art workshops of Maria Laach Abbey .

The high altar of marble is from 1771 and shows pieces of hl. Augustine , St. Remigius and St. Ambrose . Above are the sculptures of the martyrs Sebastian and Luzia .

Leaded glass window

The stained glass windows , donated by Wassenach families in 1928, depict scenes from the life of Jesus . For example: Annunciation , baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist , Jesus and the children and Jesus and the women .
