history

The tradition of the location as an educational location goes back to the 1950s. In 1956 the "Institute for Ganger Ore Mining" was founded in Breitenbrunn. At first, mining engineers were trained at the engineering school located at the institute. In 1962 the institute was renamed the “Bergingenieurschule Breitenbrunn”. Five years later the name was again changed to "Engineering School for Mechanical Engineering Breitenbrunn". In addition to the mining engineers, mechanical engineers have now also been trained here. In 1983 the engineering school was incorporated into what was then the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt (today Chemnitz University of Technology) ("Engineering School for Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt, seat: Breitenbrunn"). In the same year, the vocational education section of the TH Karl-Marx-Stadt was established at the former engineering school for mechanical engineering in Breitenbrunn. Since 1993, after a pilot phase, the Staatliche Studienakademie Breitenbrunn has been an independent location of the vocational academy in Saxony. At the Breitenbrunn location, practice-integrated dual bachelor’s degree programs are offered in the fields of “Social and Health Care” (bachelor’s degree in social work with several fields of study) and “Business” (bachelor’s degree in industry and tourism). At the start of the new academic year 2019, 249 new students were enrolled. 201 of these are new students in the social work course. In the current coalition agreement between the CDU, the Greens and the SPD, the further development of the Saxony University of Cooperative Education into a dual university is announced.
