City Councilor Weiskirchner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Weiskirchner City Council was a provisional political administrative body in Vienna from December 1918 to May 1919 under Mayor Richard Weiskirchner , which held office alongside the provisional municipal council .

The city council as a collegial body (in contrast to the [officially leading] city councils that had existed since June 1, 1920 and which also formed the Vienna provincial government since November 10, 1920 ) was introduced in the second half of the 19th century and was, as it were, the executive committee of the respective municipal council to understand. However, this was elected in imperial Vienna according to the Curia suffrage, which excluded the majority of the residents from the election.

After the founding of the republic in 1918, new constitutional laws were not immediately available; therefore the existing city council committee was adapted to democratic conditions. The changed political conditions led to a temporary compromise between the old order represented by Mayor Weiskirchner and the new order represented primarily by the Social Democrats.

The city council, which was not elected but was sent by the parties in the agreed strength ratio (17 Christian Socialists, 10 Social Democrats, 3 Libertarian Citizens), had 30 members. Franz Hoß , Josef Rain and Jakob Reumann held the position of vice mayor ; this subsequently became the first democratically elected mayor (see state government and city senate Reumann ).
