The Steina is an approximately 13.9 km long, right-hand or eastern tributary of the Schwalm in the East Hessian Bergland in the north Hessian Schwalm-Eder district and belongs to the river system and catchment area of ​​the Weser .

The Steina rises in the East Hessian mountainous region in the Knüll Mountains . Its source is in the Hochknüll about 670 m southwest of the Schwarzenborn hamlet of Richberg on the western flank of the Knüllköpfchen ( 633.8  m above sea  level ) at about 563  m above sea level. NN .

Initially, the Steina, which runs mainly in the west- south- west direction, flows westward through the Knüllgebirge, where it crosses the state road  3155 ( Seigertshausen –Schwarzenborn) a little below its origin . Then it passes a little south of this street and the village Seigertshausen, a northern district of Neukirchen , the Happelsmühle and the Hergertsmühle and then, a little further west, the Daubenmühle. A little further to the west-southwest, the stream passes the Willingshausen high school Melanchthon-Schule Steinatal at the outflow from the Knüllgebirge .
