The Steinach is a nine and a half kilometer long, right and northern tributary of the Main in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt .

The Steinach runs on the southern edge of the Schweinfurt Rhön . Together with the Hausener Mühlbach , it forms the Mühlviertel of the Schweinfurt district.

The Abersfelder Mühlbach is the left and southern source stream. It is often seen as the upper reaches of the Steinach .

After the union of their two source streams at an altitude of 261  m above sea level. NHN on the eastern edge of the Schonungener district Marktsteinach in the Flur Grundwiesen directly next to the local sports field, the Steinach crosses under the district road SW 45 ( Zum Kolben ) and then flows first in a south-westerly direction through a green zone, accompanied by a tree gallery on the southern edge of the village and on the northern slope of the Kolm along.

A little further down the stream, it is strengthened on its right side by the outflow from the village pond and shortly afterwards on the same side by the stream from the Wildenstallgrund . It now crosses the St 2266 ( Marksteinacher Hauptstrasse ) and is then fed on the south-western edge of the town on its left by the Grundwiesenbach approaching from the south-east .

Shortly afterwards in the Breitenwiese corridor , she used to run the Rotmühle . The Steinach meanders there slightly. A mill ditch now splits off from the Steinach, which used to drive the oil mill and, south of the brickworks, the Schulzenmühle . The Mühlgraben flows a little later with the brook again. Immediately afterwards a new mill ditch splits off from the Steinach.

At a small sewage treatment plant, it turns its course to the south. It now flows almost half a kilometer through the Spitzenwiesen corridor and then through the Brücklerswiesen corridor and then crosses the SW 2266 district road that has been accompanying it for a long time . The Betzenmühle is located there . The stream then runs just 300 m westwards. Another mill ditch there used to set the Klüpfelsmühle in motion.

The Steinach now runs along the wooded northern slope of the Galgenberg and then reaches the eastern edge of Schonungen. At the Sattlerstraße you will find the Hausener Mühlbach coming from the north on the right .

The Steinach passes the village, crosses under the St 2447 and the tracks of the Bamberg – Rottendorf railway line , then changes sharply to the northwest and finally flows almost half a kilometer later at an altitude of 209  m above sea level. NHN at about Main KM 337.5 from the right into the Main approaching from the southeast.

Catchment area

The catchment area of ​​the Steinach covers 52.4 km². It is almost completely in the district of Schweinfurt and is heart-shaped, with the two wings in the northeast around Hesselbach and Abersfeld and the tip in the southwest, at the confluence with the Main in Schonungen. It has a width of about four kilometers in the north and eight kilometers in the south and a height of about eight kilometers.

The highest point is north-west of the origin of the two source streams on the wooded Grainberg (up to 408  m above sea level ) north of Löffelsterz at a little over 400  m above sea level. NHN .

In the west, the Steinach EZG borders that of the Meerbach, a small tributary of the Main with its upper course, the Wildbach . In the northwest it is bounded by the Erlenbach , which drains over the Maßbach and then the Lauer into the Franconian Saale . In the north it touches the area of ​​the Sauerquellenbach, a tributary of the Geissler , which also flows into the Lauer. In the northeast it meets the area of ​​the Nassach tributary Riedbach . In the east then follows the Main tributary Wässernach and in the southeast the smaller Main tributaries Grabenmühlbach , Lausgraben , Lehenbach and the Buchentalgraben .

The zone is situated predominantly in the subspace Southern Hesselbacher Woodland of the natural space Hesselbacher Woodland (identical to the scenery Schweinfurter Rhön), the mouth portion close to the Maintal in the subspace Haßfurter Maintal the Steigerwald foothills , all the Mainfränkisches plates count.
