Characteristic

The landscape was shaped by the Vistula Ice Age around 20,000 years ago. Large bog and marshland areas such as the Havelländische Luch , the Rhinluch and the Dossebruch emerged in the lower elevations. From these lowlands, plateaus rise on ground moraine plates and terminal moraines, the so-called Ländchen , such as the Ländchen Bellin , the Ländchen Glien and the Ländchen Rhinow. As a result of the cultivation of the area, initiated by the Prussian King Friedrich II. In the 18th century, dikes, pumping stations and ditches were built and the mouth of the Havel was relocated to drain the marshy land. A long-term project for the renaturation of the Lower Havel began in 2005 under the sponsorship of the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) . Under the motto “Along the blue ribbon of the Havel”, the region is also part of the area of the 2015 Federal Horticultural Show .

Flora and fauna

The nature park is of great importance as a protected area for many migratory birds, which find resting places rich in water and food here in spring and autumn. Part of the Havelländischer Luch is designated as a European bird sanctuary . The state bird sanctuary of the state of Brandenburg is located in the Buckow district of the community of Nennhausen . The heraldic animal of the nature park is the ruff . In total, around 720 animal species live in the nature park, including beavers , otters and great bustards , and around 250 plant species that are considered endangered.

Visitor center

The visitor center of the Westhavelland Nature Park is located in the Milow district of the Milower Land municipality in a former estate complex directly at the mouth of the Stremme into the Havel .

Star Park

Hemispherical evening spring night sky in the Westhavelland International Star Park. Left east with the light bell of Berlin and the constellation Haar der Berenike , up north with rising Vega , right half of the picture from top to bottom the Milky Way with constellation Kassiopeia in the northwest, right west with setting Venus , the Pleiades star cluster and the constellation Taurus , in the southwest constellation Orion , down south.

The nature park is one of the darkest places in Germany at night, and it is even just as dark as, for example, in Namibia , so that practically only natural light from the sky with a surface brightness of 21.78 mag / arcsec² can be observed. This is why it is possible, for example, not only to see the Milky Way , but also the airglow (a faint glow from higher layers of the atmosphere), which nowadays is usually outshone by artificial scattered light .

After the first light measurements in 2009, plans and checks were made to create a light protection area or a starlight reserve. On February 9, 2014, the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) was the first place in Germany to award the nature park the title of “Star Park”. On the same day, a polar light could be observed in the nature park.
