history
A circular moat excavated in Stiefern documents the settlement of the place as early as the Neolithic Age . In the Middle Ages, the place was first mentioned in a document around 902 or 903 as Stiuen or Stiuinc , when Freising Abbey had possessions here. Stiefern is therefore the earliest documented place in the Waldviertel.
With the commissioning of the Kamptalbahn , Stiefern developed into a summer retreat with summer retreat villas and a river pool that still exists today. After 1945 the place could no longer follow the tradition of the summer resort. Changed travel habits, but also the construction of the Kamptal reservoirs, which led to a sharp drop in temperature in the Kamp, which is lined with numerous bathing establishments, deprived tourism in the Kamptal of its most important foundations. Since the municipal consolidation in 1972, Stiefern has been part of the large municipality of Schönberg am Kamp .
