Schönberg am Kamp is a market town with 1860 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Kamptal in the Krems district in Lower Austria .

geography

The community is located on the south-eastern edge of the Waldviertel in Lower Austria . The area of the market town covers 53.07 square kilometers, around 48 percent of the area is forested.

The Kamptal-Schönberg Nature Park is located in the municipality . The market town of Schönberg am Kamp is a member of the small region Kamptal Süd .

Incorporations

On January 1st, 1968 it was created in the course of Lower Austria. Municipal structure improvement through the amalgamation of the municipalities of Mollands , Schönberg am Kamp and Schönberg-Neustift to form the market municipality of Schönberg, which
on January 1, 1970, the then independent municipality Freischling joined as a district.
On January 1, 1971, when Zöbing was incorporated, the market town of Zöbing-Schönberg was created.
On January 1, 1972, the district of Zöbing left this large municipality and joined the municipality of Langenlois as a district . The remaining part of the large community has existed since then with the name Schönberg am Kamp.

history

Schönberg am Kamp was already owned by the Kuenringers in 1168 , who also owned the current Schoneberg ruins above Schönberg. 1372 defeated Margrave Leopold III. robber barons from Austria sitting on this castle. Then the rule became sovereign. In 1483 Schönberg was occupied by the Hussites and in 1485 by the Hungarians. Between 1540 and 1629 the place was Protestant.

With the commissioning of the Kamptalbahn in 1889, Schönberg am Kamp developed into one of the most important summer resorts in the Kamptal alongside Langenlois , Gars am Kamp and Rosenburg . After 1945, Schönberg am Kamp could no longer follow the tradition of the summer resort. Changed travel habits, but also the construction of the Kamptal reservoirs, which led to a sharp drop in temperature in the Kamp, which is lined with numerous bathing establishments, deprived tourism in the Kamptal of its most important foundations.

Since the 1990s, Schönberg am Kamp has increasingly benefited from wine tourism and other forms of gentle tourism.

Population development

Between 1981 and 2001, the birth balance and migration balance were negative. From 2001 to 2011 there was a strong immigration to the community of Schönberg am Kamp.

economy

In 2001 there were 55 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry operations 232 according to the 1999 survey. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at the place of residence was 830. In 2001, the activity rate was 48 percent.

Wine plays a major role in Schönberg. The 4.2 km² vineyard area makes Schönberg one of the largest wine-growing communities in the Kamptal. Excellent wines are made in Schönberg's vineyards. The main varieties are Grüner Veltliner and Riesling (Weißer Riesling or Rheinriesling).

Rail: The community is located on the Kamptalbahn . The ÖBB operate the train stations Schönberg / Kamp and Plank / Kamp as well as the demand stops Altenhof am Kamp and Stiefern .
Route: The 115.6 kilometer long Kamptalweg with its starting point in Altenwörth and its destination in Zwettl leads through the main town of Schönberg am Kamp.
Bus: Since 1995, the Garser Bus, an initiative of the “Gars Innovativ” business association, has been traveling to all places in the market town of Gars am Kamp and other places in the area, including Freischling and Raan in the municipality of Schönberg am Kamp , on Tuesdays and Fridays who do not own a car and have no connection to public transport to enable shopping and errands in Gars am Kamp.
