Strada Statale 42 del Tonale e della Mendola
The Strada Statale 42 Tonale e della Mendola (SS 42) is an Italian State Street, 1928 between Treviglio and Bolzano has been set. Because of its course over the Tonale Pass and over the Mendel Pass, its name is del Tonale e della Mendola . The SS 42 goes back on a section (Treviglio-Ponte Mostizzolo) the Strada nazionale (SN) 23 established in 1923 and the entire SN24. In 2001 the section between Treviglio and Bergamo became a provincial road. To the east of Bergamo there is an expressway on which the SS 42 was laid. This is the extension of the SS 671, which was led east and south around Bergamo. Lovere and the neighboring Costa Volpino are each bypassed by a tunnel. In the further course up to Malonno the SS 42 lies on an expressway. The SS 294 is connected twice to the SS 42, as it branches off from this, leads over the Presolana pass, and then runs back into the valley with the SS42.
administration
In various stages, the administration of the entire road was transferred to the respective province (Bolzano and Trient 1998) or region (Lombardy-Bergamo province, 2001).
Mendel race
Between 1930 and 1988 the Mendel race took place on the South Tyrolean side of the SS42 ( Mendelpass road ). In 2011 the race was reactivated as the Revival Bozen-Mendel for historic vehicles.
