Der Sturm (1910–1932) was a weekly, then half-monthly, since 1915 mostly monthly magazine of Expressionism , which was published in Berlin by Herwarth Walden . In March 1912, Walden opened the Sturm-Galerie in a demolished villa on Berlin's Tiergartenstrasse with a traveling exhibition by the Blue Rider . It later moved to Potsdamer Strasse 134 A, where the editorial staff of Der Sturm magazine was also located.

The storm was one - together with the action of Franz Pfemfert - to the great avant-garde magazines, which were founded in the early 20th century and published.

On the occasion of the “rampant cometary fever” in 1910, the magazine was originally supposed to be called Der Komet .

Der Sturm first appeared on March 3, 1910 as a weekly for culture and art . The publisher and editor was Herwarth Walden, who at that time lived and worked with his first wife Else Lasker-Schüler at Katharinenstrasse 5 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf . In 1912, after divorcing Lasker-Schüler, Walden married the Swede Nell Roslund . From 1916 to 1926 Lothar Schreyer worked as an editor for Walden's magazine, which campaigned for the promotion of all avant-garde styles: Dadaism , Futurism , Expressionism and Cubism .

The literary collaborators included Peter Altenberg , Max Brod , Richard Dehmel , Alfred Döblin , Anatole France , Knut Hamsun , Arno Holz , Karl Kraus , Selma Lagerlöf , Else Lasker-Schüler , Alfred Lichtenstein , Adolf Loos , Heinrich Mann , Otto Nebel , Paul Scheerbart , René Schickele . The storm circle formed around the magazine . In the storm Verlag published expressionistic dramas (among others of Hermann Essig and August Stramm ), art portfolios ( Oskar Kokoschka ), Künstlermonographien ( Kandinsky album) and art-theoretical writings of Herwarth Walden. The best-known publishing series were the Sturm books (e.g. the storm books 1 and 2 were works by August Stramm - Sancta Susanna and Rudimentär ). In addition to the books, art postcards based on the works of young, mostly still unknown artists were issued: Franz Marc , Wassily Kandinsky , Oskar Kokoschka, August Macke , Carlo Mense , Gabriele Münter , Georg Schrimpf , Arnold Topp , Maria Uhden , Otto Nebel and others.

Herwarth Walden made the term storm a trademark for the establishment of modern art in Germany. There was also a storm stage (1918), a storm gallery (1912) and the storm evenings , where futuristic poetry was performed. The gallery achieved European importance through the First German Autumn Salon in 1913. At the Sturm-Kunstschule (1916) directed by Georg Muche , a . a. Oskar Kokoschka ( drawings by his brother Bohuslav have also been published in Der Sturm ) and Wassily Kandinsky as well as painter of the bridge and the Blue Rider . In 1917 a Sturm bookstore was also set up.

Especially in the period before the outbreak of the First World War , Der Sturm played a decisive role in the Franco-German exchange between the Expressionists. The special relationship between Berlin and Paris must be taken into account. Poems and texts by French or French-speaking Expressionists were published regularly ( Guillaume Apollinaire , Blaise Cendrars, etc.). In view of the hostilities of both nations, this exchange broke off with the First World War, but was renewed in the early 1920s, albeit in a much more modest way.

In view of the approaching National Socialism , Walden left Germany in 1932 and went to Moscow, where he worked as a teacher and publisher.

100 years after the opening of the Sturm Gallery, the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal dedicated a memorial exhibition to her in 2012.

“THE STORM is the leaf of the independents. Today's culture and art are viewed critically. Only personalities who have their own thoughts and views express themselves in this magazine. All types of journalism and feature pages are excluded.
The weekly DER STURM contains essays on questions of art and culture in every issue. Productive art appears in novels, short stories and poems by important contemporary authors. The polemics and criticism in word and line are given the greatest possible space ”.
