Okel is a district of the town of Syke , district of Diepholz , Lower Saxony .

Geographical location
The previously independent municipality of Okel, to which "Gut Falkenburg" also belongs, is a district of the city of Syke. Together with the Syker districts of Ristedt , Barrien and Gessel , a northern area with the connection to the " Bremer Speckgürtel " is formed. In terms of population, Okel is fifth within the 13 Syker districts, and third in terms of area (14.12 km²; for comparison: Syke = 17.24 km²).

Neighbors of Okel are the Syker districts Barrien, Osterholz and Syke (core area). Of the neighboring communities in Syk, Weyhe in the north and the joint community Thedinghausen ( Verden district ) in the east.
Okel belongs together with Ristedt, Gessel, Leerßen, Barrien and Osterholz to the parish of Barrien.
Rivers / streams
- In the eastern part of the village, towards the municipality of Thedinghausen , the Süstedter Bach flows , which rises in Süstedt and flows into the Kirchweyher See east of Weyhe- Kirchweyhe. At times it is the border river to the municipality of Thedinghausen ( Emtinghausen and Riede ). In addition, a small stream called Beeke flows through the middle of Okel.

Local mayor
The current mayor of the village is Jürgen Schmock, who is a member of the FWG. The deputy mayor is called Marlene Fruchtchtenicht.

A coat of arms does not exist for Okel directly, but various coats of arms of the associations in Okel are adorned with the image of the mill of the village.
Infrastructure
Okel does not have its own church, but does have a cemetery with a cemetery chapel. The 1922 war memorial contains the names of those killed and missing from World War I and World War II . The place had its own school until 1977.
traffic
- Okel is far from the big traffic. The next federal road, the B 6, runs 3 km away through Barrien and creates connections to the north (Bremen, to the A 1 and the A 27 ) and to the south (Hanover, to the A 2 ).
- The former railway station (since 1972 only a stopping point) of the DB , 4 km away, north of the Barrier town center, belongs to the Bremen-Osnabrück line. The regional trains of the DB or the regional S-Bahn Bremen / Lower Saxony (operated by NordWestBahn GmbH) stop there a total of 38 times on weekdays .

In 1974 at the latest, all Okeler streets and some paths were given names. In Okel there are a total of 30 streets and paths that have names. There are also some dirt roads that have remained nameless. Two well-developed main roads ( Landesstraße 333 and Kreisstraße 121) cut through the town and divide it into different areas:
- the "Okeler Straße" (L 333) runs west and then south to Syke or west - and via the K 122 - to Barrien
- the "Okeler Straße" (L 333) runs east towards Thedinghausen
- the road "An der Beeke" (K 121) runs north to Weyhe -Sudweyhe
- the road "Smeer Ort" (K 121) runs south to Osterholz and on to Gödestorf

- The Okel volunteer fire brigade provides fire protection and general help, especially at the local level.
- In Okel there is also a gymnastics and sports club, a riding and driving club and a shooting club.
Attractions
- the small forest areas "Okeler Busch" and "Falkenburg", in which rib fern (Blechnum spicant) grows in some specimens
- The “Okeler Schlatt ”, also called “Eggers Schlatt”, is under nature protection .
- A golf course , north of Okeler Straße and west of Kuhlenstraße, is a 27-hole course on sandy, slightly hilly terrain, framed by old forest. Even in the winter months, games can be played without restrictions on the 105 hectare site, thanks to the elevated location on a dry ridge . The golf course is operated by the Syke Golf Club.
- The war memorial at the Okeler Friedhof contains the names of 24 fallen and missing persons from the First World War and the names of 31 fallen and 12 missing persons from the Second World War . (see war memorials in Syke # Okel )
- In Nostalgia Museum (a u a.. Are next to the village's history Okels various bicycles penny farthing from 1880), historic motorcycles , vintage cars and small exhibits presented. The museum is operated with a café in the ballroom of the former Winkelmann inn, which has shaped the Okel townscape since 1883. It is located directly on the L 333 state road at the entrance to the village, coming from Syke.
