Szczedrzyk [ ˈʂt͡ʂɛdʐɨk ] ( German Sczedrzik , 1934–1945 Hitlersee ) is a village in Upper Silesia . Szczedrzyk is located in the Gmina Ozimek in the Opolski powiat in the Polish Opole Voivodeship .

The Angerdorf Szczedrzyk is located six kilometers northwest of the municipality of Ozimek and 16 kilometers east of the district and voivodeship capital Opole . Lake Turawa lies north of Szczedrzyk .

The place was first mentioned in the Liber fundationis episcopatus Vratislaviensis as "Scedricz". This was written between 1295 and 1305. In 1400 the village was mentioned as "Scedrzikh". In 1532 the place was again mentioned as "Stedryk" and in 1644 as "Zrzendrzik".

In 1742 Krascheow fell with most of Silesia to Prussia . On August 7, 1763, the village church burned down with all the documents and documents.

After the reorganization of the province of Silesia which belonged rural community Sczedrzik from 1816 to district Opole in the administrative district of Opole . In 1845 there was a Catholic parish church, a Catholic school, a sub-forestry and 124 houses in the village. In the same year, 1069 people lived in Sczedrzik, nine of them Protestants. In 1865 the municipality of Sczedrzik had 35 farmers, 22 gardeners, eleven farm owners, 96 local farmers and 28 residents. There were also three water mills, a royal forester's house and two restaurants. At that time the school had 232 students and the Catholic Church had 6347 parishioners. The places Pustkow, Zamoscie, Nalug, Krysline and Podborze also belonged to Sczedrzik at that time. In 1874 the district of Sczedrzik was founded, which consisted of the rural communities Biestrzinnik, Sczedrzik and Tempelhof and the manor district of Dembio. In 1899 construction began on the new Catholic church, which replaced the old scrap wood church. On May 20, 1905, the church was consecrated by Cardinal Georg von Kopp .

In the referendum in Upper Silesia on March 20, 1921, 339 eligible voters voted to remain in Germany and 776 to belong to the newly founded Poland . Sczedrzik remained with the German Empire. In 1933 there were 2,100 inhabitants. In the same year, work began on the Turawa reservoir north of the village. For this, parts of the fields of Sczedrzik were flooded. On 18 July 1934, the site was by Adolf Hitler in Hitlersee renamed. In 1939, Hitlersee had 1,756 inhabitants and was part of the Opole district until 1945 .

In 1945 the previously German place came under Polish administration and was attached to the Silesian Voivodeship and renamed Szczedrzyk . In 1950 the place became part of the Opole Voivodeship and since 1999 it has belonged to the re-established Powiat Opolski . In 2005 the place had about 1550 inhabitants. In a public survey in the community of Ozimek in 2011, the residents of the place voted for the introduction of the German place name. The municipal council rejected this in 2013.

Sights and monuments

  • The Roman Catholic St. Nicholas Church was built between 1899 and 1900 in the neo-Romanesque style. The stone church building replaces the previous building made of scrap wood. On May 20, 1905, the church was consecrated by Cardinal Georg von Kopp . On the north side there are still preserved memorial stones of the former cemetery.
  • South of the church is the monument to the fallen , which was built at the beginning of the 1930s. It consists of a stele topped by a figure of the Archangel Michael or St. George riding a horse and fighting a dragon. It was originally dedicated to the fallen of the First World War. In the 1990s, the names of those killed and missing from World War II and the names of the residents murdered in 1945 were added. The monument was restored in 1991.
  • To the north of the village is the Turawa reservoir , which serves as a recreational area.
