The Zillierbachtalsperre or Zillierbach Dam is a built in 1934 to 1936, from the dam , waterworks and reservoir existing dam in the eastern part of the resin in Saxony-indication between upper resin on chunks and Wernigerode in the district resin . Its approximately 45 m high dam impounds Zillierbach for about 24 hectares Zillierbachstausee on.

The dam serves to protect against flooding in the villages located beneath its dam, including the Zillierbach, and with its waterworks it provides drinking water to many nearby towns, which is why it is located in a large drinking water protection area with the surrounding forests .

Geographical location

The Zillierbachtalsperre is located in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature reserve . It stretches between Drei Annen Hohne in the southwest and Nöschenrode in the northeast, which are located on the Zillierbach and belong to the city of Wernigerode , and Elbingerode in the southeast, which is part of the town of Oberharz am Brocken , away from the reservoir and stream .

Dam wall

location

The barrier structure of the dam is located about 3 km southwest of the Voigtstieg settlement (zu Wernigerode) on federal road 244 , directly southwest of the Peterstein ( 498  m above sea level ). The valve housing with the operating devices is located in the middle of the wall .

Data

The gravity dam was built from 1934 to 1936. It is about 38 m above the valley floor and 45 m above the foundation level. The crown of the building is at 473.8  m above sea level. NN , it is 186.5 m long and 3.50 m wide. The building volume contains around 54,400 m³ of concrete .

history

Planning, construction and World War II

The plan to build a dam on the Zillierbach came about in 1931. When construction began in 1934, cult objects from the turn of the century were unearthed. Initially, an arch dam was planned; however, the planning was changed during construction. The building material came from Drei Annen Hohne on a feeder train . The aggregates could be obtained on site. A separate sawmill was built at the dam inlet for the formwork. The cost estimate provided for 3.31 million Reichsmarks. The main work ended in June 1936.

During excavation work for the dam wall in 1935, workers unearthed a consecration fund from the Bronze Age around 1000  BC below the Peterstein . BC , which is exhibited in the Harz Museum in Wernigerode.

In the last days of the Second World War (1939–1945) the SS planned the destruction of the dam, which the Allies prevented, following the advice of the dam master .

Repair and modernization

62 years after the dam was completed, its stability was no longer guaranteed. The technical equipment no longer corresponded to the state of the art. Therefore, from November 1998 to May 2000, repairs and modernization were carried out with a financial volume of around 7 million DM .

The top of the wall was raised by 1 m and widened to 3.50 m. The parapet walls were replaced by a railing. The valve house on the Krone was given a 1.5 m wide passage. Until then, all settings had to be done by hand in-house. When it was built, drainage channels were laid in the wall between the wall segments , which gradually sintered. Vertical holes in the wall are now used for drainage. The top of the wall has been allowed to be crossed by pedestrians since the end of the repairs.

Waterworks

The waterworks , which began operating in 1937, is located about 150 m below the dam in the Zillierbach valley . During the dam modernization (1998–2002) it was modernized. Until then, the measurement data were only checked on site; automation was therefore built in. The waterworks supplies drinking water to Elbingerode, Elend , Schierke , partly Rübeland and Wernigerode. The clean reservoir water is treated in the waterworks. The mean annual drinking water output is around 2.92 million m³.

Since the Stadtwerke Wernigerode for the urban area of Wernigerode will no longer take water from the dam from 2021, the dam will then be handed over to the Holtemme-Bode water and wastewater association .

Reservoir

location

The Zillierbachstausee lies within its south-western part on the border of the cities of Oberharz am Brocken and Wernigerode , its northeast part belongs entirely to Wernigerode. It is located in the middle between federal road 244 (Nöschenrode – Elbingerode) in the east and state road  100 (Drei Annen Hohne – Hasserode) in the west, which run some distance from the reservoir. To the northwest lies the Wellbornskopf ( 555.1  m above sea level ), to the southeast the Ortberg ( 550.1  m above sea level ) and northeast of the Peterstein ( 498  m above sea level ). The dammed flowing water is the Zillierbach , a southeastern tributary of the Holtemme in the catchment area of the Elbe ; In addition, six small streams, some of which do not carry water all year round, flow into the reservoir. In the narrow southern part of the reservoir, near the east bank, there is an island on which shrubs and trees grow and which becomes a walkable peninsula when the water level is low .

Data

The reservoir is about 24 hectares. It extends in a south-west-north-east direction for about 1.4 km in length and is a maximum of 300 m wide. It has around 2.63 million m³ of storage space and 2.83 million m³ of total storage space . Its target is at 470.19  m above sea level. NN and its catchment area is about 10.7 km². The mean inflow is around 0.15 m³ / s.

leisure

Because of the drinking water protection area, swimming is not permitted in the reservoir. The forested reservoir can be hiked from Drei Annen Hohne, Elbingerode and Wernigerode, for example, and can be hiked around the shore on a 4.5 km long circular hiking trail that also leads over the dam wall. A side path leads to the Peterstein, located near the dam, from whose vantage point you can see the dam and the reservoir. On the rocky hilltop, trees obstructing the view were removed by the local forest management during the period of the dam modernization.
