The Belo Horizonte-Confins / Tancredo Neves airport earlier Confins Airport ( IATA code : CNF , ICAO code : SBCF ) is the main airport for the city and the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte in Brazil . It is located in the neighboring town of Confins . Since September 2, 1986, the airport has borne the name of Tancredo de Almeida Neves (1910–1985), elected as Brazilian President in 1985 .

In 2012, the airport was the fifth largest in terms of passengers and the eighth largest in terms of flight movements. This made it one of the busiest airports in the country. The operator is BH Airport.

Transport links

The airport is 38 km north of downtown Belo Horizonte. There are regular connections with buses, taxis and “Executive Airport Shuttle” buses. It is possible to change from the bus to the Belo Horizonte metro. Tickets are available from counters in the arrivals area.

history

The airport was built by Infraero and opened in 1984. It was supposed to reduce the congestion at Pampulha Airport , which was then operating at 120% of its capacity of 1.3 million passengers per year. At that time it was expected that the number of passengers would reach two million a year by 1990. In fact, it wasn't until 22 years later that the one million mark was reached. In 2011 the maximum passenger capacity was five million per year.

After its opening, only a small part was used by Confins. This was due, among other things, to the distance to downtown Belo Horizonte and - until recently - the lack of viable alternatives to the expensive ($ 40) taxis. The congested Pampulha Airport remained the airport of choice.

To change this situation, the government of the state of Minas Gerais decided in March 2005, with the support of the federal authorities, to restrict flights in Pampulha to aircraft with a capacity of less than 50 passengers. In the months that followed, most flight movements had to switch to Confins, which gave the airport a new dynamic. At that time, 130 flights were relocated from Pampulha to Confins, which led to an increase in the annual passenger volume from 350,000 to 3,000,000 this year.

The problem of the long distance from Confins to Belo Horizonte city center has been reduced by recent projects such as the extension of the MG-10 highway, which is part of a larger Linha Verde project. The road connects the city center with the airport and is intended to help reduce travel time to the airport. Another project called “Industrial Airport” is underway. The government wants to waive taxes on industrial companies that are located near the airport.

The cargo area has a capacity of 18,000 tons and a storage area of 6,400 m².

Gol airline operates its main aircraft maintenance base at the airport.

On April 26, 2011 it was announced that in order to accelerate the necessary renovation and expansion work for some infra-aerodromes, concessions would be awarded to private operators, including - in a second phase - Confins. The plan was confirmed on May 31, 2011, adding that Infraero would retain 49% of the shares in each privatized airport and that negotiations were expected to be concluded in the second half of 2012.

On November 22, 2013, the Brazilian government tendered the concession to operate the airport from 2014 to 2044 to private operators. A group made up of CCR (75%) and the operators of Zurich (24%) and Munich (1%) airports were awarded the contract.

In 2015 and 2016 the airport was expanded to include the new Terminal 2. Terminal 2 is structurally integrated with Terminal 1. The new Terminal 2 also replaces the interim solution of Terminal 3, which was used for international flights from 2015. The expansion has increased the maximum passenger capacity to 22 million passengers per year.

Although he was held by another passenger until landing, he did not survive.
  • On December 17, 2001, a Rio-Sul Boeing 737-500 with the registration number PT-SSL missed the runway by approximately 70 meters. The landing gear was damaged during the crash landing in bad weather conditions. All 108 passengers and the crew survived. The plane was sold to Tatarstan Airlines and had an accident on November 17, 2013 at Kazan Airport . All 50 people on board died.
