Between the fronts is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The report produced for ORF under the direction of Harald SICHERITZ was first broadcast on February 17, 2013. It is the 863rd episode in the series, the 29th case of the Austrian investigator Moritz Eisner and the fifth case of the Eisner / Fellner investigative team.

The car of Kásim Bagdadi, an Austrian of Iraqi origin, explodes in the courtyard of the Palais Liechtenstein in Vienna just as the American conference leader Marcus Sherman drives up with his security people in a black limousine. The explosion kills Baghdadi and a police officer, Sherman himself remains unharmed.
Due to the explosive nature of the case, Eisner is also transferred to the case. Together with his colleague Bibi Fellner and the extremely resolute Melanie Warig, he is supposed to solve the case in the special commission “Between the Fronts”. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight against Terrorism (BVT) assumes immediately that the bomb attack is likely to be a politically motivated crime and has an Islamist background.
Marcus Sherman knew Kásim Baghdadi personally and considers it unlikely that he was supposed to have been a terrorist. He was friends with his daughter Mary, who is deeply shaken by Kásim's death. In addition, there are other acquaintances in the Baghdadi area who absolutely do not consider him a suicide bomber. Only Martin Ledic, a former college friend, considers him capable. He himself is an expert in electrical engineering and Eisner thinks that the attack could well have been an act of jealousy on the part of Ledic, since according to his research he was also in love with Mary Sherman and the car bomb was triggered by an electronic remote detonator. Suicide bombers usually set off their explosive device directly. Further inconsistencies arise when Martin Ledic is found hanged from a power pole. On the one hand it looks like suicide because of disappointed love, on the other hand feelings of guilt about Kásim Baghdadi's death could be the cause. The BVT therefore wants to declare the case closed, which makes Eisner even more suspicious. According to the forensic examination, Ledic was killed and so he continues to investigate. Using the cell phone connection data, Eisner and Fellner find a secluded property that Hofrat Dr. Johannes Kelter, a member of the Ministry of the Interior, belongs and where, from the point of view of things, the bomb was assembled. Allegedly the property was rented to a group of students. On closer examination, the object turns out to be the headquarters of a right-wing radical secret society, of which many high-ranking ministry members are members who have long been calling for stricter laws against the threat of terrorism. The attack was therefore likely to have been controlled from there in order to give more weight to this demand. Martin Ledic, as a member of this group, had suggested Kásim Baghdadi as a pawn sacrifice and he was thus at the same time rid of his rival. The bomb is believed to have been installed as a completely new car door in Baghdadi's car, as there is evidence that his car was recently in a workshop. Eisner and Fellner visit them immediately with the support of other teammates. After Kurt Greiling, one of the employees, behaves conspicuously, he is arrested and evidence is saved. At first they cannot prove complicity to the company boss Claus Hoppenstädt himself, but hope to change that based on a confession from Greiling.
Right from the start, the work of the police was more obstructed than supported by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter-Terrorism and its director Fred Michalski. After the suspect Greiling was arrested, who, according to Eisner and Fellner's investigations, is clearly Ledic's murderer and, through the detonation of the bomb, directly responsible for the two victims of the attack, Michalski puts him under his personal protection and declares that he is his V. -Man would be. Eisner and Fellner are thus left without evidence and have to recognize that in this case they are between the fronts and will not achieve anything further.
