Adygeysk ( Russian Адыгейск , Adyghe Адыгэкъалэ ) is a city in the autonomous Republic of Adygea in the Federal District Southern Federal District . It has 12,237 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the foothills of the Caucasus on the southern bank of the Krasnodar reservoir , in the immediate vicinity of the administrative border between Adygeja and the Krasnodar region . The southeastern capital of the republic, Maikop, is about 100 km from Adygeisk. The closest cities are the city of Krasnodar (22 km northwest) and Goryachi Klyuch (28 km south).
history
Adygeisk was established in 1969 as a settlement during the construction of the Krasnodar reservoir . Most of the people from the 22 localities that had to be completely or partially flooded during the damming were resettled here. Since most of the resettled Adygeans were, the new city was named Adygeisk ("Adygean City"). In total, over 8,000 people were resettled to Adygeisk.
In 1976 Adygeisk was recognized as a city and renamed in honor of the Adygean national poet Zug Teutschesch in Teutscheschsk (Теуче́жск). In 1992 it got its original name back.

Economy and Infrastructure
The city's economy is largely based on food industry operations. These include a bread factory and a dairy that specializes in the production of the nationally known "Adygeian cheese" from goat's milk . The area around the city is dominated by agriculture. A significant part of the Adygeisk population works in nearby Krasnodar.
The M4 trunk road runs through the city and leads south to the Black Sea coast and north past Krasnodar to Rostov-on-Don . Eight kilometers from the town there is a station of the RŽD belonging North Caucasian Railway .
culture and education
Adygeisk has a local history museum that opened in 1994, as well as three libraries and a total of 14 different educational institutions. The city's cultural offerings also include the center of Adygeic folk culture and the mosque , which is the most important building in the city.
