Théobald "Théo" Meurisse (born December 24, 1933 in Aix-en-Provence , † May 14, 1993 in France ) was a French film architect .

Life

Meurisse had studied architecture at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts in the 1950s . In 1961 he joined the film industry and for the next seven years assisted the production designers Léon Barsacq , Jean d'Eaubonne , Alexandre Trauner and François de Lamothe .

In 1969 he made his debut as chief architect in Jean-Pierre Melville's resistance drama Army in the Shade , for which he designed sober, functional decorations. Like hardly any other architect of his time, Meurisse worked in the 70s and 80s with virtually all top directors of French entertainment film, including Marco Ferreri , Philippe de Broca , Yves Boisset , Gérard Oury , Yves Robert , Bertrand Blier and Claude Sautet . Almost all the top stars of domestic cinema of those years acted in Meurisse's film buildings, including Alain Delon , Jean-Paul Belmondo , Gérard Depardieu , Yves Montand , Pierre Richard , Louis de Funès and Patrick Dewaere .

Meurisse mainly designed the film structures for comedies as well as for tough police and gangster films. Melancholy, cheerful portraits of people such as Yves Roberts Take care of Nicolas and Claude Sautets Vincent, François, Paul and the others remained exceptions.
