The Circus is the fifth studio album by the British pop band Take That . It was published by Polydor on December 1, 2008 . The album received a gold record in Germany .

background

John Shanks produced the record in London . The Circus was released in the UK on the same day in Germany a day later than Circus by Britney Spears . According to the band manager, this was a coincidence: the band had worked on the album for months and the title should therefore not be changed. Fans would be asking about Britney Spears or Take That's new album anyway. The first single to be released a week earlier was Greatest Day , which entered the charts at number 1 in Great Britain. The second single was Up All Night in Great Britain on March 2, 2009 , followed by The Garden in Germany and other countries on March 20, 2009 . The fourth and fifth singles were Said It All and Hold Up a Light . These two appeared after the tour for the release of the later live album The Greatest Day - Take That Present: The Circus Live .

Reviews

MetaCritic calculated a score of 64 percent. Digital Spy , The Sunday Times and Evening Standard each gave four out of five, The Times , Allmusic , The Guardian and Daily Mirror each gave three out of five stars. Yahoo! Music awarded seven out of ten stars.

BBC Music found: "An overwhelming album, Take That are the exquisite champagne of pop, they bubble with playful bubbles and mature in a wonderful way with age."

The Daily Mirror wrote: "You bring a fallible, human quality to an album that is particularly intended to gild your strong connection with your loyal fans from the start."

The Sunday Times noted, “ The Circus will no doubt have similar sales figures, so driving are songs like“ The Garden ”,“ Greatest Day ”,“ Said It All ”and the apparently Amy Winehouse-related“ How Did It Come To This ” "So full of gigantic refrains."

The Times said, "Take That's return is the gold standard: the incredibly successful second attempt by a band that has made it their business not to waste their stash of goodwill."

Dani Fromm from Laut.de found the music too calm compared to the album title “Zirkus”. Her impression was: “When it comes to the circus, all sorts of colorful associations arise immediately. Of all of this, Take Thats 'The Circus' bests the experienced artists. However, the brilliantly well-rehearsed quartet completely dispenses with daring tightrope acts. [...] In view of the self-irony celebrated on the last DVD, I would have been happy about one or the other wink or here and there a little detour in my own genre, alien realms. The inclined viewer does not hear anything of this. […] Soft piano, soft acoustic guitar, soft background noise, soft singing. [...] Wind instruments including tuba (!) And oscillating strings enrich the instruments. If used well dosed, it achieves opulence without appearing overloaded. Messrs. Barlow, Donald, Orange and Owen also play beautiful melodies, no question about it. […] Take That really keeps several light years away from smashing porcelain. […] Fans are guaranteed to obey the 'Hold Up A Light' invitation. There is a constant lighter alarm. Who knows? Perhaps that will shed some light on the mystery of why one shamefully buried the snappy song of all as a hidden track . "
