I I I ( three ; pronunciation : [ θriː ]) is the seventh studio album and the tenth album by British pop - band Take That .

The album was released on November 28, 2014 and was their first studio album after Progress (2010), as well as their first project as a trio after Jason Orange had officially left the limelight and Robbie Williams continued to pause for the time being. According to Gary Barlow, the sound of the album is "an amalgamation of the last eight years of take-that material." The album debuted at number one in the UK and became Take Thats seventh number one album. In 2015 a tour of Great Britain and a few other European countries followed . The group presented their new album in 51 concerts and played another 15 pieces from previous albums.

background

The three of Gary Barlow , Howard Donald and Mark Owen started recording in January 2014, Jason Orange was undecided about his future in Take That at the time. Barlow said the album was made "with plenty of room for Jay" in the hopes he would rethink and join it again. At the time, Robbie Williams suspected that he might not be part of the admission process due to his touring obligations and the imminent birth of his second child. In fact, Williams was ultimately not part of the recording sessions.

In September 2014, Orange officially announced its departure from the band in order to permanently withdraw from the limelight. The remaining members then recorded the parts of the album that were retained for him and finally released the finished product on November 28 of that year. Donald commented that in the wake of Orange's decision, the band had toyed with the idea of separating again, but decided against it and instead pushed ahead with the completion of the album. Owen said of the album, “It was pretty depressing, we had to change it and put more energy into it. So the three of us locked ourselves in around May for two or three weeks and experimented with different sound images. For me, this marks the point in time when the writing process really began. The atmosphere was more positive. Now it's one of our most euphoric recordings to date. "Barlow added," We're a long way from our retirement album. "

construction

The album's lead single, "These Days," was co-written with Jamie Norton and Ben Mark and produced by Greg Kurstin ( Katy Perry , Kylie Minogue , Lily Allen ). The song was described as a typical Kurstin song, it contains its trademarks, the “ chic- like funk guitar riffs and pet shop boys- like voice effects” as well as the “pure, unadulterated pop” written over it. "Let in the Sun", the second single, is described as a cross between Calvin Harris and Mumford & Sons . The song was produced by Stuart Price . Barlow called the song "homage to the early years" (the band's first attempt in 1990–1996), Owen said it was "the song your papa would write when he tried to look youthful again." “If You Want It” is described as a “90s-sounding pop hit with a great production and an invigorating chorus”, also produced by Kurstin. One verse of the song, "Everything Could be a little bit brighter" ( Everything might be a little lighter / brighter ), is regarded as an allusion to recent disagreements in the band. Barlow noted that a video for this song could recall the early years of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince . "Get Ready for It" was written for the soundtrack of the self-deprecating British agent comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service , a homage to the early James Bond films starring Colin Firth and Michael Caine . The song was produced by John Shanks and has been described as "loud and euphoric and unmistakably Take That," with its drum-accented intro and a Barlow battle cry. Early reviews suggested the song could be as successful as their 2007 single "Rule the World" (also written for a movie soundtrack: Stardust - Der Sternwanderer ). Even Jeff Lynne is among the producers of the album.

Singles

In addition to the single, each release also includes an instrumental version of the respective song.

  • "These Days" was released on November 14, 2014 as the lead single before the album went on sale. The song premiered on October 10th and a music video was released about Vevo . The single went straight to number one on the British Singles Chart after sales began, making it the band's twelfth No. 1 single.
  • "Let in the Sun" was released on March 2, 2015 as the second single from the album.
  • "Higher than Higher" was confirmed as the third single on May 14, 2015 and released on June 8, 2015.

    Reviews

The Evening Herald gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars and stated, “For a trio, Take That creates an unbelievable sound. This is pop at its finest, the English way. " The Herald continued:" Although four years have passed since their last album release, Take That seems to be destined to weather all changes - with a relentless good mood- Optimism that defies personal misfortunes and natural disasters. Take That's mission is to write a big chorus and then get it to the point in the studio. And that's exactly what they do in III - again and again - and they have fun doing it. The golden era of glam rock lives again in the colossal I Like It . And they are very philosophically in Love Life ( Love Life ) where it says in the chorus, the If I before I wake up, ask myself: Did I give enough love ' (If I were to die before I woke up, I would ask myself: Have I given away enough love?) "The Herald concluded December as a" sensational super blast for millions of fans of the newly designed Take That. "

Music Matters rated it favorable ( buy recommendation) and commented that parting with Orange was a loss, but Barlow, Owen and Donald had “created an album that features the favorite take on their reunion: at the same time absolutely contemporary and yet distinctive to sound like Take That. ”In summary, the review concluded:“ They still beat out killer choruses ”and“ Take That's future may no longer be orange, but it is still brightly shining ”.

The NY Times reviewers also gave it a buy recommendation.

The Daily Telegraph described the music as "usual smooth, mass-market pop; the album gives the fans what they want: euphoric, hymnal pop to sing along with consistently uplifting lyrics about the triumph of love, the power of friendship and the value of loyalty. ” The Telegraph described the first single ( “ These Days ” ) as [as setting] the stall out, with its nostalgic request: "take me back" ( take me back ) what the lilting disco delights of the 90-year-boy band origins evoked again by take that, contemporary pop gloss, everything strongly harmonized and strongly condensed. The epic ( narrative ) medium-paced ballad Freeze can be interpreted as a comment on the departure of Mr Orange, in which Gary Barlow asks: 'just freeze so that we don't have to start again' ( Don't move so we don't start all over again must begin ). The reviewer concludes that the album's intentions are "sincere: to entertain, please the fans, and keep the show going - and it certainly fulfills those demands in every way."

Allmusic awarded 3.5 stars and stated that the trio had "a shadow of the elegant sensibility of Progress " and that the album was "livelier than Barlow's solo work". The album is "modern, thoughtful and tasteful at the same time".

The Evening Standard, The Times and Entertainment.ie awarded 3 out of 5 stars each, The Independent awarded 2.

Metacritic calculated a score of 42% (42 out of 100 points, evaluation based on various reviews).

Metro awarded 4 out of 5 stars and dubbed III as an “irresistible tinsel-draped Christmas foretaste”. The review named the "opening lines of Portrait , provided with a rapidly increasing melodic indecision"as special highlights of the albumand recognized a "classic Barlow ballad in Flaws". Critics also praised Greg Kurstin's involvement as a producer: He added "a glimmer of contemporary production intelligence" to the album.

The Sun awarded 4 out of 5 stars.
