The next Uri Geller - Incredible phenomena Live was as Mystery scale telecast talent show radio station ProSieben . The first season began on January 8, 2008, and the season finale was broadcast on March 4, 2008. As with other casting shows, the candidate for whom the fewest viewers had called was dropped from the show . There was no jury, but Uri Geller was able to let a candidate of his choice into the next round. In addition to the candidates, Uri Geller also performed magic tricks. The winner of the first season was the Swiss professional magician Vincent Raven from Bern. The second season held in Germany began on January 13, 2009 and ended on March 3, 2009. Jan Becker was the winner . The show was stopped because the odds were too low.

In November 2008, the live show Uri Geller Live: UFOs and Aliens - The Unbelievable TV Experiment was broadcast on ProSieben as a kind of spin-off .

Concept of the format

The eight-part show was Geller's first major appearance in Germany after his Uri Geller Show, which was broadcast on RTL in November 2004 . It was moderated by Stefan Gödde and has been broadcast live on ProSieben since January 8, 2008, every Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. In the PR campaign accompanying the show, ProSieben described Geller as the greatest “mystifier” in the search for a successor.

Several celebrities seated near the stage were included in the presentations of the candidates and confirmed at the beginning of the broadcast that there were no agreements or acquaintances between them and the candidates. In Germany, the model Anni Wendler , the presenter Sonya Kraus and the actor Jürgen Vogel participated in the first broadcast by making themselves available as partners for the demonstrations. The date and time of the respective demonstration were compared with mayors who were also included in the format. The reason for this was that it would ensure that no previously made recordings are used. The mayors, like the three celebrities, were listed as "credible witnesses".

Most of a show was designed by the candidates whose performances Uri Geller observed and rated. At each show, Geller also carried out his own “experiment” that the audience could take part in at home. The corresponding demonstrations by Geller were limited to the actions he had repeatedly carried out over the past few decades, they did not vary them and did not go beyond them. The viewers were asked to use a paid call center to report on phenomena that are said to have occurred in their homes during the broadcast.

Towards the end of the broadcast, the viewers opted for the best performance via televoting, which was also chargeable . The candidate with the fewest votes was eliminated. On February 26, 2008 in the ninth episode, the Swiss Vincent Raven was determined as the winner and received a prize of 100,000 euros.

On March 4, 2008 Vincent Raven appeared in a tenth episode The next Uri Geller - The best mentalists in the world for Germany against the three national participants of the international TV format from the Netherlands (Aaron Crow), the USA (Angela Funovits from Ohio) , Israel ( Lior Suchard from Haifa) and won that show too. However, the decision was not made internationally, but only by the German viewers.

Audience ratings

The first episode reached a total audience of 3.85 million, which corresponds to a market share of 12.1%. A market share of 20.1% was achieved in the advertising-relevant target group. In the subsequent episodes, the ratings decreased slightly each time, with the fifth episode to 2.79 million viewers and a market share of 9.2%. The market share of the target group 14 to 49 year olds was 15.6 percent (1.94 million viewers).

The first episode of the second season was followed by only 2.21 million viewers with a market share of 7%. Among the 14 to 49 year olds, the market share with 1.54 million viewers was 12.1%.

International distribution

The show's model is "The Successor" ( Hebrew היורש) from Israel . It was the most successful program in Israeli television history with ratings of over 50%.

In November 2007, another adaptation of the original format ran under the title "Phenomenon" on American television on NBC . In contrast to the other formats, the illusionist Criss Angel was added to Geller's side as a jury member. This provoked an argument live when the candidate Jim Callahan delivered an exaggerated performance in which he pretended to establish connections with the dead in the afterlife. Angel questioned the supernatural abilities of the candidate and Uri Geller live and asked them both to reveal details about the envelopes he had prepared for a prize money of one million US dollars. Neither Geller nor the candidate accepted the challenge. One envelope contained the numbers “9”, “1”, “1”. Angel was angry about how such people claim to have paranormal abilities, flaunt it and earn money with it, but do not use or have used their alleged abilities to thwart terrorist attacks and save lives, for example.

The broadcast format is also broadcast internationally on other stations belonging to the ProSieben Group. The Dutch channel SBS 6 De Nieuwe Uri Geller has been broadcasting since January 26, 2008, and the Hungarian TV channel TV2 also broadcast the format in spring 2008.

criticism

The performances shown belong to the usual program of professional magicians , such as those shown by James Randi , for example . The Internet edition of Stern reported on Constantin Entertainment's “participation contracts” that are available to the Stern editorial team and that, according to the magazine, deliver the participants to the will of the producers. The magazine highlights this particular a passage out where the candidates certify that they "possess strong mental and intuitive abilities such as mind reading , telekinesis , suggestion or auto-suggestion feature." Such claims are usually frowned upon among magicians because they are obviously untrue. According to media reports, some of the participants managed to enforce a different formulation for their contracts, which reads as follows: “The contract partner is a magician who uses trick techniques to create the illusion of e.g. B. mind reading, telekinesis, suggestion and / or autosuggestion or other paranormal phenomena. "

In his show TV, Stefan Raab ridiculed the broadcast format several times. a. named Vincent Raven's ravens the best trick on the show.

In the past, Geller had unsuccessfully opposed the publication of a video on the Internet platform YouTube in which a sequence from the Israeli model of The next Uri Geller can be viewed. In it you can clearly see how Geller slides a magnet over his finger in order to then make the needle of a compass deflect in a seemingly magical way. Explanations of most of the tricks listed in this program are circulating on video portals and blogs.

Defenders of the show, like Uri Geller, counter that the show is not intended as evidence of existence for magic and supernatural abilities. Rather, the show should astonish and fascinate people through spectacular and extraordinary performances. Uri Geller said in an interview: “I've been asked many times: Uri, what kind of people are those on stage? If they are tricksters, they are illusionists; or are they psychic? To be honest, I don't care what they are. I'm only interested in seeing a fascinating performance. I want my hair to stand on end and give me goose bumps. "

Press reviews

The response from the German-speaking media to the format was consistently negative:

"Uri Geller's elevation as judge of psychic competencies is just as credible as Helmut Kohl's as chairman of an ethics committee on illegal donation practices."

- Spiegel Online

"Biggest fraud since the invention of television!"

- RP Online

“In the live show on Pro Sieben, ten 'mentalists' are competing for 100,000 euros. The viewer should be served mysterious, paranormal and supernatural. In truth, however, it is cheap sleight of hand, coded messages and other cheating on a 'We love to entertain you level. "

- World Online

"Germany is completely off its socks, yes, we are all bewitched now - at least claims Bild.de. And to blame for this magical change in our people's soul is Uri Geller, who recently performed magic at Pro7. "

"You have to imagine Geller's show as a kind of casting for mentalists - for people who either have a tit themselves or who believe that the audience has a tit."

- World Online

"The real phenomenon is that this magician, against all common sense, makes a name for himself again every few years and attracts an audience like no other."

- sueddeutsche.de

"The fact that Pro Sieben bought the format anyway, rattles about 'supernatural, supernatural, inexplicable' phenomena, calls the ten candidates the 'chosen one' and pays homage to this disgusting impostor: That is the only inexplicable phenomenon of Uri Geller."

- Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung
