The Tips were a reggae band from Düsseldorf founded in 2008 . They mixed classic reggae with elements of ska , punk , rock and soul .

history

Beginnings and first demos

The Tips were founded in 2008 by Aljoscha Thaleikis and Christian Heilwagen. The trio was completed in early 2009 with the now permanent line-up of Janosch Holland behind the drums. A few concerts were played and the first demos were made, which were also commented on in the relevant trade press.

High Sobriety

The Hamburg indie label Rotlicht Records , operated by Lars Häriger from the Skatoons , noticed the band and signed them. In the spring of 2011, The Tips began recording their debut album High Sobriety in the studio of the Hamburg skapunk band The Skatoons . Skatoon members Tobe and Henning supported the band during the recording. The album was released at a CD release party in Neuss in mid-August . The response to High Sobriety was mostly positive. The Fanzine Ozelot.TV described The Tips as "one of the most important German newcomer bands in 2011". The album was followed by a contract with the booking agency Soulfire Artists and concerts all over Germany. A first mini-tour as well as some festival gigs took place from early summer 2012.

Lineup change and trippin '

In August 2012, the previous bass player and founding member Christian "Franky" Heilwagen announced his departure from the band. In view of the upcoming concerts, Philip “Faf” Pfaff was brought on board as bassist. Pfaff had already accompanied the band as a roadie and merchandiser in the summer of 2012 and gained experience in several bands. The Tips made their first appearance with the new line-up just five days after Franky's departure at the Open Flair in Eschwege.

In winter the band started to write more songs for a new album. During this phase, Gernot Krebs from the independent label Long Beach Records became aware of the band. After the first meeting, it was decided to work together in the future. At the same time, The Tips switched to the Berlin agency “Muttis Booking”. In the spring of 2013 I got in touch with producer Guido Lucas , also known as the “indie pope”. In June 2013 the second album Trippin 'was produced and recorded together with Guido Lucas in his BluNoise Studios in Rheydt-Odenkirchen . Most of the album was recorded live and the band's live mixer, Manuel “Coop the Radical” Lederer, DJed for various scratches. In the run-up to the album release, The Tips, in cooperation with the Hamburg skapunk band Rantanplan, released a benefit 7 ″ record for the benefit of the Aerosol Arena , a graffiti area in Magdeburg . The album was released in November 2013. The artwork of the CD comes from the Californian tattoo artist Opie Ortiz , who is responsible for the artwork of the American reggae / ska / punk legends Sublime . Even Trippin ' was - among other things by the renowned rock magazine Rolling Stone - positive feedback. The music video for the single My Girlsfriend's Mother Is a Cop was also broadcast for the first time on the magazine's website .

Another line-up change and dissolution

On April 18, 2017, the band announced that there would be another line-up change. Due to illnesses the band had to cancel several shows in the past, which in turn tore on the nerves and on the band's own claims. So Ali Thaleikis decided to leave. His replacement was found in the rehearsal room after hours. The new front man is called Stefan.

On May 23, 2019, the band announced their breakup via Instagram and Facebook.

reception

Over time there have been positive reviews in the relevant trade press. For example, the Riddim Magazine wrote: “Anyone who can start with Sublime , the Long Beach Dub Allstars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers will also love this band! Full points."

According to Rolling Stone , the album is characterized by "[...] clearly contoured songs that the trio brings to life with enormous energy."

When it was released in November 2013, the album 'Trippin' took first place in the Amazon MP3 charts in the reggae category.

The third albums were the ticket to many larger festivals for the band. The Tips have already played at the Boomtown, Bearded Theory 2016, Open Flair Festival, Horst Festival , the Hanfparade and the Kult festival in Porta Westfalica . In addition, the band has already shared the stage with numerous internationally known artists, including acts such as the Mad Caddies , Social Distortion , The Toasters , Jaya the Cat , Rakede and The Prosecution .

style

The slamzine describes the style of the band as follows: "Trippin 'is danceable, snappy and sounds skillful at all times. The whole thing also has charm, [...] making The Tips the first serious skapunk rock band from Germany for a long time. "

The authors of the website konzert-touristen.de described a live gig by The Tips as follows: “Even if a strong similarity to Sublime can hardly be overlooked, I have to say that the band sounds better than anything that came after Sublime. And they're also damn authentic. [...] The party factor almost seemed like there wasn't going to be a second band. "

other activities

In March 2013, The Tips began to support a skate hall in Düsseldorf beyond the music and organized a benefit concert in this context to preserve the hall in the Böhlerwerke. Another concert with the same goal followed in January 2015 at Titus in Düsseldorf.

On July 7th, 2014 “The Tips” was a guest on the show Heimatkult on the radio station 1 Live .

For their 3rd album Twists'n'turns, the band was able to win over Skindred frontman Benji Webbe for a feature on the song Birds'n'trees.
