action

Abby Richter works as a producer for a local television station and places high demands on the ideal man that has been sought for a long time. Since the ratings of her show have been falling lately, her boss hires guest host Mike Chadway, who uses vulgar humor to analyze women and their relationships under the title The Naked Truth .

When Abby finds the perfect man in her new neighbor Colin, Mike helps her get together with him. However, when a planned trip of the supposedly happily in love couple has to be canceled because of a business trip with Mike, Mike and Abby kiss. When Abby is then in her hotel room, she is surprised by Colin. While they are making themselves comfortable, Mike comes to Abby's hotel room, but withdraws immediately when he sees Colin. Abby then realizes that Colin only loves her because she has acted on Mike's instructions. She breaks up with Colin that same evening and finds out the next work day that Mike has quit and switched to another local station.

At a hot air balloon festival , Abby spontaneously takes over the moderation of Mike's successor and makes fun of men with allusions to past events. Mike interrupts their report and there is a discussion in front of the camera about their relationship and the kiss on the trip. When the balloon finally takes off, the transmitter is still broadcasting from the on-board camera without the two of them knowing, while they continue to argue. After Mike confesses that he loves Abby, a reconciliation ensues.

criticism

The evaluation of the American film reviews by Rotten Tomatoes showed a very poor value of only 13% positive reviews. Above all, it was criticized that the very committed acting main actors could not hide the weaknesses of the template-like script.

The editors of fm5 judge: “On the way to the happy ending,“ The Ugly Truth ”not only tramples numerous clichés, but also brings real laughs. Gerard Butler is the role of the rough macho perfectly cut to the body and Katherine Heigl is also taken from the honest and hopeless romantic. A predictable but funny romantic comedy that even some men should like. "

Peter Koberger from the editorial team at kino.de sums up: “Stimulation and situation don't need each other, biting dialogues, flat jokes and satirical elements can coexist and viewers can have fun if they trust the two stars. Because Heigl and Butler are strong entertainment weapons in this beautifully photographed comedy, even if they don't always get the right ammunition. "

Harald Mühlbeyer from Cinefacts saw a "romantic comedy without blunders and without originality".

Carsten Baumgardt from Filmstarts found critical words for the film, at the same time praising recognition for the protagonist of the screwball comedy : “Gerard Butler, who plays brilliantly, puts the over-the-top drawing board farce at least into mediocrity. [...] While Butler alludes to cliché traps with fun, irony and charisma, Heigl has to run the gauntlet through the faux pas, which culminates in an unspeakable Harry and Sally memory scene. [...] “Despite the criticism, Baumgardt holds the film in particular "For romantic hearts", "if the demands are not raised too high in advance." Because "the dialogues offer some nice tips in the battle of the sexes despite all predictability."

In a nutshell, the lexicon of international films gives the following verdict: "A formulaic romantic comedy that only develops a little life through deliberate violations of civil decency."
