Theodor Friedrich Johannes Ludwig Brand , called Theo Brand (born August 6, 1925 in Freising ; † September 22, 2016 there ) was a German composer , music teacher and organist .

Life

Theo Brand was born on August 6, 1925, the only child of Maria Brand (née Lichtinger) and the biology , chemistry and geography teacher at the humanistic grammar school Franz Brand in Freising. He spent his childhood and youth in Freising, where he attended the elementary school St. Georg and the humanistic cathedral grammar school. In 1943, at the age of 17, he was called up for military service and therefore received a certificate of maturity in August of the same year . Since he was plagued by unpleasant diseases, he did not have to go to the front. He witnessed the bombing raids on Munich and Freising. Shortly before the surrender of the Nazis in 1945, he had to hide on a farm near Freising, since it under the " Freedom Action Bavaria " Employees of Major Brown was. He was immediately released from the prison camp in Erding when he was able to present a letter from Cardinal Faulhaber about his importance as an organist in Freising. From 1945 to 1952 Brand worked as choir director and organist at the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Freising-Neustift. From 1946 to 1949 he studied school music with a major in piano , until 1951 concert organ and composition a . a. with Joseph Haas and Wolfgang Jacobi at the University of Music in Munich . In 1950, he took the pedagogical examination for the higher teaching post at the Theresien-Gymnasium in Munich. From 1950 to 1951 he worked as an organ teacher at what was then the Institute for Teacher Education in Freising, before starting his service as a music teacher at the secondary school in Amberg in 1951 . He then worked from 1952 to 1986 as a music teacher at the German Gymnasium in Freising, which was opened in 1965 a. a. was renamed " Camerloher-Gymnasium " through his initiative . There he met the Latin , religion and history teacher Elisabeth Glas, whom he married in 1958 and with whom he had two sons and two daughters. From 1964 to 1973 Brand directed the Freising Chamber Choir as the successor to Staatskapellmeister Hanns Haas . From 1966 to 1968 he had a teaching position for the history of church music at the Philosophical-Theological University of Freising and from 1976 for music theory at the University of Music in Munich. Theo Brand died on September 22, 2016 at the age of 91 in Freising. He was buried in the St. Georg cemetery in Freising.

Theo Brand's compositional work includes instrumental and vocal works. Brand found his stylistic roots in Gregorian chant , with Igor Stravinsky , Paul Hindemith and Carl Orff . Numerous productions were recorded and broadcast by Bayerischer Rundfunk . Also live broadcasts such.
