action

After seven years of college, Thomas "Tommy" Callahan graduated from Marquette University and returned to his hometown of Sandusky, Ohio. His father, industrialist and widower Thomas "Big Tom" Callahan offers him an executive job at the family company Callahan Auto. Big Tom also reveals that he plans to marry Beverly Barrish-Burns and that their son Paul will become Tommy's new stepbrother. During the wedding, Big Tom suddenly dies of a heart attack. After the funeral, doubts arise about the future of the company, which is why the bank fails to keep its loan promises and demands immediate payment of the debt. Ray Zalinsky, the owner and operator of another auto parts company, offers to buy the company. Tommy suggests leaving his inherited shares and house to the bank if it supports the sale of brake pads. The bank agrees, but sets the condition that the company must prove that it still has viability by selling 500,000 brake pads. Tommy goes on a sales tour of the country with his father's grouchy assistant, Richard Hayden.

Meanwhile, it is revealed that Beverly and Paul are not mother and son, but married con men with criminal records. Paul thinks Big Tom's death is ideal because the original plan was for Beverly to divorce Big Tom and collect half of his estate. However, Beverly says they are in trouble because Big Tom only left her a controlling stake in Callahan Auto. Tommy's hyperactive demeanor discourages multiple potential buyers, creating tension between Tommy and Richard. In addition, a multitude of incidents resulted in the almost complete destruction of Richard's car. When Tommy manages to persuade a grumpy waitress to serve them chicken wings after the kitchen closes, Richard realizes that Tommy has the ability to understand people just like his father and suggests that he sell that way should. The two pull themselves together and can see rising sales.

However, Paul sabotages the company's computers so that sales posted by sales manager Michelle Brock are lost or misdirected. The bank therefore isolates itself. Beverly and Paul approve the sale of Callahan Auto to Zalinsky. Hoping to convince Zalinsky to reconsider, Tommy and Richard travel to Chicago. There they are allowed a brief meeting with Zalinsky, but Zalinsky tells them he only wants Callahan because of the company's reputation, not the employees, and that he plans to dissolve the company after the purchase.

Tommy and Richard are refused entry to the boardroom due to Tommy's reputation when Michelle appears with Paul and Beverly's criminal records. Tommy devises a plan, disguised as a suicide bomber , to get the attention of a live TV news team and thus make their way into the boardroom with Michelle and Richard. In Sandusky, Callahan workers are watching the action on a television. Tommy quotes Zalinsky's own advertising slogan, which says that Zalinsky is on the side of American workers. Zalinsky signs the order for 500,000 brake pads. Since he thinks the order is pointless as he will soon own Callahan's car, Michelle shows him the criminal record. Since Paul is Beverly's real husband, her marriage to Big Tom was illegitimate. Beverly's heir becomes invalid and Tommy the rightful heir. Since Tommy does not want to sell the shares, the deal with Zalinsky fell through and the company was saved thanks to his order. Paul tries to escape but is arrested. Zalinsky admits that Tommy outdid him. The film ends with Tommy on the lake talking to his father in the afterlife and telling them that he intends to continue his father's work and that he begins a relationship with Michelle.

Reviews

On Reel Film Reviews, David Nusair praised the interaction between Farley and Spade, which made the "clichéd" storyline forgotten. The figure of Tommy is "believable" without sacrificing Farley's penchant for body comedy.

Kino.de saw an "amusing, turbulent buddy film". Farley plays a "sympathetic bowl".

Outnow.ch found that the interplay between the main actors worked “excellently” and attested that the film had “decent entertainment value” and a “surprisingly appealing” story.

The lexicon of international films described the film as “an action-packed, but not very funny slapstick comedy that relies almost exclusively on the rapidly wearing body comedy of its full-screen protagonist”.

Awards

The film won an MTV Movie Award for Best On-Screen Duo (David Spade & Chris Farley). Farley was nominated for another MTV Movie Award in the Best Comedic Performance category. Bo Derek was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in the Worst Supporting Actress category.
